First time in ten years I needed them and they failed to get back to me. Two calls but nothing. They happily took my cash each year but service was non existent when I was stranded on house moving day. I was right in the st.

Anyway, without naming them, probably the most well known name in recovery ain't getting any more of my dosh so who now???

I expect vast amounts of replies giving both sides, but Ive been with RAC for 10 years and probably only called them 6/8 times at the most.

They have always arrived and either repaired the issue or got the car to a garage.

My ony complaint is the serial annual dance you have to do to avoid automatic renewal rapeage.

"Experiencing high call numbers" "we will call you back shortly"

I was stuck on a long sweeping bend on a busy A road. When a petrol tanker and bus nearly collided I called 101 and the police were very helpful.

That was February, I'm still waiting for their call back.

I've been with Green Flag for 20 years as have most of my family, called them only a couple of times and never had any problems, My brother had great service from them.

My mother on the other hand changed to the AA and was left alone on the A30 in Cornwall for 5 hours.

My only issue with Greenflag was when i changed my car a few years ago, i've been on auto-renew for nigh on 20 years but on changing cars it was for some reason taken off auto renewal, i only found out earlier this year when i changed cars again only to be told it had expired 3 years previous, all they could say was "did you not notice the payments not coming out your account" being £6 a month i'm hardly going to notice amongst all my DD's. They offered to renew for £119, i bought online direct through their site for £69 confused

GEM Motoring Assist - had to call them out a couple of times when my battery died a couple of years ago.

Turned up when they said they would - no problem coming out twice in a couple of days. I like the deal that you get too - the full Recovery, Homestart, Onward travel, etc. all in for about £90.

Saying that, though, the AA were ok when the Civic was new and had to come and rescue me with because of a big hole in the front sidewall.

With the RAC now, since acquiring the Qashqai - haven't had to use them yet.

Errr - February as in 10 months ago and only now you decide to write a post about it

I think I'd have lobbed a few complaints at them at the time it happened

I'm guessing that the renewal has come in....

I use GEM now too, on the strength of some excellent reviews and some very attractive prices. I've not had to call them out myself, but my mum did a few weeks ago and was extremely impressed. Good communication, turned up about 15mins quicker than they said they would, got her mobile again.

Full cover for two people in whatever car you happen to be driving, including homestart and nationwide onward travel, came to £125 or so. Makes the AA and RAC look quite silly.

Yes. The auto renew went which prompted another debate about the whole thing over again.

They did refund it so I'm on the hunt following recommendations.

I think if I was left high and dry having paid for a service not provided - I'd have argued for a refund in Feb and cancelled then but I can see how an auto renew would bring it all bubbling to the surface again

If it's an Alpha Alpha company then all I can say is the times that I have needed them I've never had any issues

I had reason to call out Volvo Assist last week. Operated by Mondial assistance who had a local contractor out to me within an hour. Diagnosed an overcharging alternator and had my car recovered 30m to the volvo Dealer. I was still at my office and Enterprise turned up with a hire car (320d msport sadly they had nothing else left!)which I could have for normally 3 working days but because of Christmas etc till 30th Jan.
My V50 is 5 1/2 yrs old and 109000m. I do question the wisdom of the main dealer service but with it come "complementary" breakdown assist which seems very comprehensive also covers accidents and european use.
Whilst not impressed in needing a new alternator I was impressed with how well I was looked after.

Having worked in the recovery game for a while a few years ago I have seen how they all work! We contracted for all the major companies and I have been with Green Flag ever scince. The AA have a nasty habit of relaying customers, eg, Manchester to London 4 or 5 changes of truck. RAC and AA will always try and send their own patrols first which means a long wait when they are busy.Green Flag generally use local contractors who will be quicker getting to you and may be able to offer more local repair options.I have used them a few times now and wouldn't change!

I fully accept that YMMV, however, when I had an alarm issue on my DC2 Teg, the RAC sent a right gorilla of a subby out to collect it. Left filthy greasy hand prints all over the bodywork....

Autoaid (Equity Red Star) without the pay and claim - still the pot luck of recovery firms depending on where you break down and unfortunately they seem to run on some kind of "no claims bonus" pricing structure - so if you've broken down in the past year it costs more.

Strangely the last 2 times I broke down with Autoaid they treated me like I was with Autonational and didn't make me pay and claim.....
