Why do we have NSL signs?
Discussion
If only there was some kind of book and competence test; you know... to demonstrate that you are competent to understand what the road signs mean - before you get to drive a vehicle.
And if only such a book were freely available.....
https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits
https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/highway-code
If there was ever a case for the mandatory repeat testing of theory.... this is it.
Quite remarkable really. Especially on a car enthusiast forum.

But but but..... A roads have a different limit for HGV, LGV, towing.
White van man is restricted on DC's and A roads.
I agree with the OP,it would be better to have a decisive limit and like in Germany, other signs for reductions for weather conditions or towing etc.
Mainly because the majority of drivers really dont have a f
king clue on what speed the sign allows them to travel at. Dumbing down - perhaps, but I recon it may well be a good idea.

Everywhere except through McDonalds, 60mph drive through - http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?...

Certain roads such as parts of the Colwyn Bay Bypass are special roads but are not motorways. Hence the National Speed Limit doesn't apply to them and they have to be signed as 70mph. You can see here on Google Street View a sign showing what sorts of road users are prohibited from the Junction 23 to Junction 17 of the Colwyn Bay Bypass, basically the same ones that would be prohibited from a motorway, and you can also see 70mph signs rather than NSL signs.

A stretch of road from the outskirts of Lancaster to Heysham had its speed limit increased, in a reverse to the usual trend, from 50mph to NSL and red ringed 60mph signs were put up first of all before being replaced by NSL signs. The Daresbury Bypass has sections of single carriageway and dual carriageway road, all 60mph and all signed with red ringed 60mph signs. I assume it's to reinforce that the dual carriageway bits are 60mph for those who don't keep an eye on the signs and may be confused by them changing.
The NSL signs are basically a throwback to when they meant no speed limits and, of course, they still to mean that in the Isle of Man. It's a black line crossed through a speed limit sign showing an end to all other speed restrictions so, as is now the case, the National Speed Limit applies.
