Never owned a second car before, looking at P38 Range Rovers for about £1,500 but can't seem to get insurance below £500.

I'm 29, 9 years no claims, live in a good area, have declared it will do 3,000 miles a year. Was expecting £200ish, tried my GF, same age, 12 years no claims but similar results.

I did manage to get it for around £360 but that was using my no claims which I now have found out you can only use once, which will be on my main car.

Tried classic insurance but didn't seem any better.

Any ideas?

most insurance companies will just match your NCB. I know they have for me. In the past I have been OK with different companies too.

Have you tried with the company you are currently insured by?

Had same dilemma recently. £400 worth of Puma cheapest insurance is £300 for the year whereas new i30 (main car) is £200 for year.

Gah!

Tried Admiral multicar but to no avail. In the end kept the no claims on the i30 and took the 'hit' on the Puma frown

Not the best start to shedding...

Run that one past us again? Because it's not generally the case, as evidenced by the OP's question, and my own experience.

Try Adrian flux. Not used them myself but were pretty good for my brother when he owned 2 cars and a van.

In my 47 years on this earth I've never been able to understand insurance company logic. We went 3 car for the first time last year and forgot the NCB was car-specific (completely illogical if the claim incidence risk is for the driver). In my case I put the NCB on the Tuscan and started afresh with the Aygo. Managed to make the Aygo cheaper by adding my Mum who's 72 and will never actually drive the car (explain that one....) Don't know what your daily driver is but may be worth swapping them round despite the relative mileages. I don't like multicar as I find insurance goes in cycles - given company competetitive one year, astrononomical the next. Plus you have one big bill in one hit. This year my Tuscan insurance halved with no change in circumstances, the other two both went up (best deal not renewal).

That's what I was led to believe. Was pleasantly surprised when Aviva said they'd mirror my 5 years NCB on my second car.

Speak to a specialist broker such as Glynwood. I pay £150 a year on a Caterham 7 on a limited mileage policy.

Try 1st central. They are really cheap and usually 1st on all the comparison sites.
NB under no circumstances should you insure a car you need/ treasure etc. with them, and you should only insure your second car for one year and then switch. They get dreadful reviews on Google and probably deserve them. They don't do the driving other cars bit which is usually critical, but your first policy should cover that. They are apparently really slow to provide a replacement car if you crash ( so what, you're insuring a second car). When I decided to garage the M5 and bought a shed 528i as a daily they were miles cheaper ( 400 quid odd if memory serves) than the next cheapest. I took a chance on not having to claim and it paid off. You may not feel that it's worth it but it is an option.

My Cerbera insurer mirrored my 9 years NCB on a specialist policy.

Our XFR-S was a 3rd 'normal' car and that required a fresh start, although that would have been mental so my wife insured the cheapest of the 3 normal cars to insure and I used my NCD on the XF. It would have been handy to have it mirrored, but I've only had it on classic type policies to date.

Try Classic Line - as long as car is at least 10 years old, garaged over night at normal address and limited mileage, then they mirror main vehicle ncb. Also my premium did not increase significantly at renewal.

In France they have a system where bonus applies on all cars you own, even if earned on one car. So build up max ncb on a Metro, then buy a fleet of exotic cars, and you have max ncb on them all.

But of course it works in reverse. Have a claim on one of your vehicles, and you lose ncb on them all, whereas here, if someone steals your moped, it doesn't reduce the bonus on your Lamborghini.

The French constantly say their system is illogical, that they should adopt the UK system, and it isn't fair that a claim on one vehicle has an effect on the bonuses of all other vehicles.

Which proves just one thing. Everyone likes to moan about insurance.

I would be more worried about buying a £1500 p38 tbh.
Google 'p38 buyers guide' and go and look at a few first.
Ive has three of them, the later 'thor' (year 2000 onwards) are better.

To the people who have had their ncb mirrored. What happens if you want to insure the car elsewhere after the first year? does the mirrored ncb stay current? So effectively it has taken one year to earn say nine years worth of ncb that you can use with another insurance company?

When I bought the new Subaru I only had 1 year NCD from a fiesta, but a full NCD on the RB.

They moved my full NCD to the new car, and mirrored the 9 years onto the RB, saying that after 1 year it would be same as a full 9 years anyway (providing it is claim free).

I pay less than £700 for the pair.

Shop around.

Where it is mirrored you do not actually build any ncb on that car.

He's not wrong, They are great cars, But if you spend £1500 on one you'll likely spend double/treble that putting it right.

TBH from my own experience, £500 for a 29yr old with no NCB(available) on a P38 is about right, give or take £50.

The way insurance works regarding second cars is a complete urine removal, but that's the way it is.

Ring companies directly.

That's fine then if you plan on staying with that company or another will mirror it, but i guess there are many that won't?

You could also try Heritage multi car insurance. Every case is specifically underwritten.

Pace Ward will do a family fleet policy that allows various cars/drivers to build up a no claims bonus individually, and not be affected as a group should a claim arise on one of the vehicles.

I insure a modified Jap import spec Evo, a Lexus IS300 and my work van on one policy........if I stuff the Evo, the no claims on the other 2 is unaffected.
