A Range Rover that we could love in the future?
Discussion
Imagine it's 1995 and the P38 Range Rover is in production.
Then consider -it's still 1995 by the way - a tidy 12 year old MK1 or Classic as they became known. A decent X or Y reg 4 Door? Maybe a nice 2 Door?
1.2.3. You are back in the room!
Wind the clock forward to today, and considering you'd looked after it which would have cost of course, you would have a very sought after car.
For all their faults, there is a lot of love out there for the original Rangey.
Yesterday I saw a gorgeous L322. It was 03 plate, in dark green and cream leather. Not an inch of bling on it. Indeed it looked to be a low spec model from the casual look over I gave it in the shopping centre car park.
No sat Nav, just a radio. No headlamp cleaners and very modest small looking wheels like Police Spec L322s had.
It got me thinking. There's not much love for the P38 (The XJ40 of the Range Rover range?) and I can understand why. A reputation for electrical problems and front end styling nicked from a Talbot Horizon, it's not everyone's cup of tea.
But what about an unmolested early L322? There's somthing to me that's very appealing to the look of them. To me, it looks like a Range Rover should with obvious styling DNA going back to the original while still looking like a design that was fresh back in the 2000s
Would it be a nightmare to own? I'm guessing 100k miles would be the norm.
Would it be in 2035 if kept well be something people would look at and admire like many of us would a 30 year old classic today?
I cannot comment on these specific cars as I know nothing about Range Rovers but with regard to how sought after the later models will be in years to come, they will never reach anywhere near the heights of the 'great originals', and this factor is compounded by the fact that the later models are always produced in much greater numbers than the aforementioned trendsetting icons of design... So basically, no I would not be buying a cheap RR expecting that it is going to shoot up in value like a RR Classic in years to come.
