Hi, so I put my R32 up for sale on here yesterday.. today I have received contact through pistonheads from a James Canavan, we have been emailing about the car back and forth all day, so far seems genuine, asking all the usual right questions that any seller would want to know and bargaining on price etc. He is a dealer who would like to transfer the money either into my bank or paypal then collect the car once payment has cleared (we are looking at £11,600) - I have already said I would not accept payment via PayPal as I don't feel it would be secure enough, it would have to be a bacs payment into my bank account. And I obviously wouldn't let the car go until payment is cleared (and I'm thinking it would be wise to call the bank once cleared and check the money is actually accessible, maybe even transfer the money into my savings straight away)

I know of people who have had genuine sales like this before, however I am just concious to hear of other people's views or experience with this kind of sale. .. am I mad?!

Insist on bank transfer and call your bank after its in to check its cleared and non cancel able. I did this recently for a car I sold for 2k ish.

Paypal you have the chargeback risk and the fees on top.

Can you get him to scan a copy of his passport or driving licence too? At least for further confirmation you are dealing with someone who exists.

I fancy a laugh.
What reason can the buyer not talk on the phone to you / cannot visit the car?

Sorry, a dealer wants to give you money having not seen your car?

I'll eat my internet hat if this turns out to be genuine.
OP, you can eat your R32 if this turns out to be a fraud.

I sold a car to a dealer via PH. Did the discussion via email and phone. Then he collected the car and paid (once both satisfied). If anyone is going to buy your car unseen, Matt is hat is most probably safe.

But key. No one who is genuine would not make a call, surely?

I sold a friends car to a dealer via PH - seller had left the country (working abroad) and the car was stored locally to me so I was helping out - payment was made by the dealer to owners account. very easy process

Now if the questions asked are sensible and it's constructive dialogue then I'd be inclined to think it wasn't a scam...........

Good point, I missed that bit.

No phone call smells fishy

Reckons he is happy as I have sent a million photos of the car, you can clearly see its a good car and it's history etc . He is based in Hull so will come and collect.. I have known dealers to do this frequently. And have had several dealers emailing me silly offers and to come and take the car 'off my hands' (like it's some sort of wreck getting in the way??!!), its in for a good deal so i knew i wouldnt be short if offers...

When my gdad passed away it was a dealer that came down and collected his 4×4 - all went well there..

part of me feels like telling him to go for it, I guess I've got nothing to lose until (if) the money comes through.. I'm not daft enough to let the car go without knowing I actually have the £££

I hate buying and selling cars lol, when buying I always feel sick that I've bought a dud car etc, when selling I get paranoid about really having the money

If he's coming to collect I'd be a lot happier, if it was just a transport company I'd be nervous.

Not sure I understand your conern, OP. The buyer is the one taking the risk not you, so why worry? It doesn't matter if he sends a pink elemphant pulling a trailer to collect the car as long as you have cleared funds in hand.

I've sold 2 cars to dealers in this exact way. They transfer a deposit of about 200 quid and ask you to remove the advert, and send someone who visibly checks it, arranges the rest of the transfer, and takes it away when your happy.
Nothing wrong with that at all.
I sold an M3 and A 335d both in this way

Is he physically collecting it or sending a transporter?

If he is physically collecting then go with him to his bank, watch him draw out the cash or bankers draft, then pay it into your bank.

Have you googled him/the business?

Pretty normal in the trade to buy cars completely unseen by bank transfer.

+1

Sold two (over £6k per car too) blind to a trader contact I have in the last two months. One was a family members car they wanted help with a quick sale and one was our personal vehicle. Both times funds were sent on the day of collection or just prior and each time cleared in full, transporter driver does a few checks then off they go. Pictures/correspondence via email.

It sounds fine to me. Tell him to go ahead and transfer money into your account.

Once the money is in and cleared that will be that it's your money and can't go anywhere.

R32 golfs are not readily available at auction and almost a bit of a niche car so he may well be browsing the pistonheads adverts for that type of car.

What year and mileage is your car out of interest ?
