Parked in a disabled space....£50 charge
Discussion
Went to the cinema with Mrs WR last night, as it was raining heavily I took a chance as it was dark (6.00pm), and there were several available disabled spaces close to the entrance , figured the parking gestapo would not be operating at that time of night.....(Not something I have ever done before btw, to the best of my knowledge)
Got back to the car, yes, you guessed it, parking charge ticket slapped on windscreen five minutes after I left the car.
£90, reduced to £50 paid within fourteen days.
I have not posted this to ask for advice how to try and avoid this ticket, playing on some "technicality", I was in the wrong and I do not have any excuses, in fact I have just paid the "charge" five minutes ago. Bit of a sickener, but there you go.
Reason for post?
Don't make the mistake I did, it's not big, it's not clever and it could cost you the price of a decent meal out....all for the trouble of walking another twenty metres....

Should have sent them a video of you limping, That'll learn em'!
In all seriousness, I once got told by a good friend that a disabled bay isnt a "Legal" disabled bay unless it has a sign infront of the space (I.e just the markings on the floor dont count) can anyone confirm, just wondered?

Does it matter though? If a disabled bay is marked so any reasonable person knows that it is intended for people less able than themselves, even if not a legal requirement, shouldn't courtesy prevail? Same as someone elderly and infirm on public transport. I would give up a seat to someone who needed it more as it is courtesy not because a law says I must. Parking charge ticket? Was this the cinema's own car park? Whilst I would not have parked in the bay you did, although you admit you were wrong, if this was not an official parking ticket I would have binned it.Got back to the car, yes, you guessed it, parking charge ticket slapped on windscreen five minutes after I left the car.

Fair play holding your hands up. Caught and coughed up, good on you.
It is infuriating when you see so many bays for disabled, toddlers and now charging bays... A lot of which are empty that there are less and less regular spaces. Those that are there are tighter by the day. Anyway, good man and learn.

During a lads road trip across the US many moons ago we pulled into our hotel in Yosemite National Park and tried to find a space. Unfortunately for us there were only two, one with a 5 minute walk in the blazing heat with all our luggage, the other conveniently near the front door but clearly marked disabled.
As one of our group had a disabled family member he was particularly insistent that we avoid the disabled bay however his objections were over ruled by the rest of the tired / travel weary / hungover / lazy loafers and we pulled in to the disabled bay regardless.
As we entered the hotel carrying both our cases and varying degrees of guilt a large pick up truck trundled by, V8 throbbing , with nothing less than a small crane on the back and a wheel chair directly under it, the driver looking rather forlorn at the lack of disabled bays.
I've never seen such a thing in my life and to this day I'm not sure if it was operated by the hotel to shame able bodied guests.
Since then I've never parked in a disabled bay! Least it didn't cost me 50 notes though....

If it's a private company ticket - bin it.
Not the 'good' advice it used to be, see legislation introduced in 2012 here:http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2012/9/schedul...
TL/DR; in many circumstances the private parking company no longer has to prove who the driver was and can hold the Registered Keeper responsible for the debt. Ignoring correspondence may leave you with a claim and CCJ against you.
I wouldn't ever use one, but what do we think if someone uses one who has a temporary injury, I get tendinitis and it can be pretty debilitating, I still wouldn't use a disabled space but if you saw someone get out of a car who was walking with a pretty bad limp would you object ?
Same with someone who is walking with crutches following a broken leg or any other injury, even pregnant or just elderly.
Having a Blue Badge doesn't necessarily mean you have more need of a disabled parking bay, I think it would be fantastic if the public could just self Police and only use those spaces when they really need them and not have to have a badge or be shameless enough to use them without.

Martin Lewis website has a load of info on this.
I've gone down that route twice before and got away with it. Ignored the letters and "Solicitors" threats for six months and they (eventually) gave up. (Not disabled parking though) Rules have changed (Tightened up) in the last twelve months. If it's a private company ticket - bin it.

Anyhow, I could not be arsed with the hassle this time tbh, I felt in my own mind morally I did wrong, accepted it and paid up(reasonably) happily.
I will not do it again, make sure you don't...you may be in a wheelchair yourself one day.....(Hopefully not)

Damn you! I was ready to release the keyboard warrior rage - Caps lock and everything, but there you go being all reasonable.
Non-disabled people parking in disabled bays is a pet hate of mine, my Nan was wheelchair bound and the amount of hassle and faff involved requires a good bit of space.
It's disappointing to see the amount of "how to get away with it" posts on here. It's not overstaying 10 minutes in the car park, not having a space like that can really cause issues for people that need them. Regardless of time of day, on principle people that do it deserve what they get. As you've readily held your hands up to, to your credit.

I wouldn't ever use one either but i think the only way it could be done was via a doctor issuing a temporary type permit - however it would never work as it could and would be abused and not used properly. Actually it could be done properly if each permit had a URN which detailed when it was active from and with which car, however the parking inspector would need a networked gadget that could then verify the make, model and reg of the car, if the permit was active and even which borough it was issued.
Sorted.
Also if your tendinitis is really that bad, or you have a broken leg you probably wouldn't be driving and your 'chauffeur' would have to drop you at the door of wherever you're going and park elsewhere
