Insurance for Test Drives
Discussion
Evening all,
Just after a bit of advice and hope someone on here can help.
I've been a company car user for the past 8 years and in December decided to opt out. My insurance was covered by the company fleet policy and whilst i'm still covered for company vehicles, Whilst i'm insured third party on my wife's car, i don't actually have any private policy in place.
So here's the problem - for the budget i've got to get a car, i'm most likely going to be buying from a private seller and a lot of adverts make comment that they will only allow test drives on receipt of insurance - fair enough.
Is there any way in which i can get temporary cover to allow me to test drive a car in order to see if it drives how i would expect? Obviously i can't get cover on a car i don't own so there is no way i can get a standard policy to cover me but if anyone knows of an alternative, i'd appreciate it.
Cheers!

A google of TEST DRIVE INSURANCE UK gave plenty of hits.
First hit here. http://www.which.co.uk/cars/driving/car-hire-and-c...
Try it - you will find plenty of providers.
Good luck with the purchase.

Thanks for taking the time to post. Of all the things i never thought to Google for...!
Strangely, it seems like all of the "test drive insurance" companies websites are in partnership with the same company.
Looks like i'm probably paying about £40 for a days insurance to test drive a 52 plate 530...
Alternatively, has anyone ever bought a car on the basis of a passenger test drive? I can't see how that would work to be honest.

Bought my last car (tvr) by having a passenger test drive, checking it over and then organising insurance before having a test drive myself.
I knew the car was good and I could always cancel the insurance with minimal penalty if I found anything major wrong.
Couldn't get temporary insurance because of the type of car.

I have sold my last three cars that way.Last one was a guy from Sweden spending an arm and a leg to get here to check the car out. ( He bought it too. It was not a cheap car either )
I couldn't insure him. He couldn't temporarily insure himself. Did pax rides - and let a specialist garage for the brand check out the car.
As the garage did all the servicing and work on the car - they knew it inside out.
To be honest 90% of the driving public probably wouldn't know what they are looking for. ( apart from is it comfy - do I fit - and could I live with being in here )
If I am on the flip side - I would pay for an RAC check - they will drive it - and let you know of all problems.

I guess that's the point - i don't know enough about the mechanics of the car to diagnose every creak, rattle or whine. It would merely be a guess - and one which could cost a lot of cash if i got it wrong. If I am on the flip side - I would pay for an RAC check - they will drive it - and let you know of all problems.
WRT an RAC check, how would this work? Would i do this (for example) after leaving a deposit or would i arrange to have it happen one the day i see the car?
My apologies for asking what are probably stupid questions - this is the first private purchase i'm involved in and would rather be prepared than uninformed.
I second the RAC check idea.
When I was living in Ireland I bought a few cars from the UK, the RAC guys will travel out to the seller do a full mechanical inspection down to checking the paint thickness!! Very impressed with the service and as it was the RAC the seller usually has no issue in letting them come by as it's less likely to be something a time waster would do.
