Hiya. I just bought a car from a dealer only to find out when I got home that it has previously been a cat D write off. It wasn't advertised as a cat D so might try to return it to the dealer as I was missold? Any advice on what to do would be appreciated.
Thanks

Might? If you werent aware it was Cat D there wouldnt be any "might" if it were mine. I see you're local, who did you get it from? PM as no naming and shaming on here...

How did you find out when you got home? Don't tell me you did you a check on the car after you bought it.

A fitting name really.
As for what to do take it back.

With a dealer you can return it as they are obliged by law to tell you it was a Cat D. I'd want a substantial discount or to return the car, A private seller is not however obliged by law to state that a car has been previously written off - Often dealers will try and sell write offs as "private sales" or "selling on behalf of the owner"

Probably when he tried to insure it.

Was it a dealer with premises or a home trader?

Have you actually done a HPI check and have the correct date it became a cat D and know for certain it is?

Where did you see the car advertised ie autotrader or ebay?

My motorbike is a cat c. Its immaculate. Considering its 15 years old.No rust. Perfect mechanics. If its already old, price reflected the cat d then don't rule it straight out.

Send me the reg and I'll confirm, lots of people get confused about HPI reports as they sometimes include details of write offs attached to registrations that are no longer on the car.

Also, was it a main dealer or a 'trader'?

My V5 for my own MG Midget (which was Cat D in '07) has the following under "Special Notes" (section 3) on the front.

"Substantially repaired and/or accident damaged; identity checked on 08.06.2007"

IIRC the seller doesn't have to disclose whether or not the car is a write off - unless he is asked. Meaning that unless you said "has it been accident damaged" or "is it cat c/d" the seller doesn't have to tell you. Also Cat D wouldn't show on the V5

If identity was checked, it will be cat C.

Cat D doesn't show on V5.

BF is right the text checks can be misleading. A very generous offer to check the car.

Not for Cat D & was only relatively recent anyway. My 944 was a Cat C & had an unmarked V5C

Hiya thanks for all your help.
The car was advertised as being "100%HPI CLEAR".I believe I am entitled to a refund/compensation due to this fact.It was advertised at a similar price as other cars of the same model and year etc. However I wouldn't of bought the car for the price I paid if I knew it was cat D.the thing that worries me is that I can't see any signs of the repair in the service history, so I don't even know what got damaged.Think I may go back to the dealer and see what they say about it.

No ifs or buts - take it back regardless - you will be the one out of pocket (unless he offers to refund 40% and you keep the car). Less hassle to just not deal with write offs, to be honest.
