Porsche Cayman GT4 testing images

Porsche proves it's not just SUVs and hybrids with the second hardcore sports car in as many days!

Amazingly enough, a proper fast Cayman hasn't yet been confirmed by Porsche. So at the moment, these are just pictures of a Cayman with carbon ceramic brakes and a big wing. But it has to be the GT4, or the R, or whatever it will be, doesn't it?

Hurry up and confirm it Porsche!
Hurry up and confirm it Porsche!
There's been some discussion around the PH office that this Cayman could indeed be the car for those nonplussed by the 991 GT3. Bear with us. The 911 is now quite a big car, it obviously doesn't have a manual option and it's arguably so fast that the track is the only place to properly exploit the performance. A really quick Cayman, providing there is a manual option, could be the answer to those concerns. Lighter, more agile, more accessible; it sounds a mighty combination.

The old 987 Cayman R was 54kg lighter and 10hp up on the contemporary S but this car looks an altogether more serious prospect. See the front splitter, that big old wing, those brakes and a pair of racy seats (without the GT3 RS child seat, you'll see).

Again we can only speculate on powertrain and again state the 400hp 3.8-litre engine from the 911 Carrera S would surely be perfect. There's even a much improved seven-speed manual from the 911 GTS that could be used also. Hopefully something will be made official soon and let's pray there's a manual option available somehow. We've been staring at these pics for ages finding no proof of either a stick or paddles.

Anyhow, with nothing announced the forum speculation can continue for a little longer. If the GT3 RS makes a Geneva debut then that would probably push this Cayman back to Frankfurt in September. When there is anything from Porsche we'll be sure to update the story.

Looks great, but suspect there will be fair few 981S owners like me that would upgrade until they discover the stratospheric depreciation of their existing car ! I'm taking a positive view and saying if I don't upgrade to a GT4, I've got a huge amount of cash in hand to make mild sensible upgrades to my existing car, and cover all the running costs, including track day costs for some years come !

One of these in black with light grey wheels to sit alongside my black Integra DC2 would have my automotive life complete.
I don't think I would buy another car for the rest of my years.

Yes please. One of these with a manual gearbox would be perfect.

I thought they weren't going to make a fast cayman as people then wouldn't buy 911's...
I think they should just make a mid engined 911 variant. Price it right next to the 911. Then people can choose between traditional rear engined with rear (ish) seats but poor weight balance. Or mid engined, 2 seats but better balance. Crucially they should have the same engines etc. and be priced the same.

Mind you that would put the mid engined 911 right up against the Audi R8, both of which are part of the VW group.

It doesn't need the 911s 7 speed gearbox, it needs a 6 speed with ratios you can use on real roads.

Porsche ought to offer reasonably priced dealer-fitted shortened diff ratios for the manual cars. Sell the cars with ridiculously long gearing for the emissions play, then get the diff changed afterwards.

I remember reading that Mazda did a similar thing when the Mk3 MX5 came out in the UK, complete with a silly ride height to meet some regulation; for £300 the Mazda dealer would fit Bilstien suspension that put the car back down to where it should be (and looked loads better).

Are we viewing different pictures? It looks like just another generic sports car to go shopping in.

Impasse - have you ever driven a GTx ?

if this is a GT4, then I'm fairly safe in saying that it will driver rather different to a sports car to go shopping in ....

and if it is a GT4, I for one wouldn't mind one smile

assuming the pricing structure follows that of the Cayman vs the 911, it should be reasonable value
the new GT3 is just too rich for me right now

[quote]The spy photographer who caught these shots of the undressed Cayman GT4 on a German highway points out the upgrades visible on the mid-engine screamer: Lowered ride height, huge cross-drilled brakes, unique wheels, and that signature elbow-height wing out back. Note also the sliver of an airscoop just ahead of the front trunk opening, a signature GT3 detail appended to the GT4.

The thing I didn't like too much about the Cayman was the rear end, but I think this looks seriously cool.

Stunning, I like this better than the 911 shape.

Price???

Based on the GT3 being £100k+ and sold out now comanding >£120k
The 997 GT3 being >£70k and rising.

I would bet that this will be ballpark £75k basic and easy to spec to £100k.

This does actually look to be genuine. The standard (red) brakes in the R&T pics and the PCCBs above are definitely those fitted to the GT3, i.e. the larger 410/390mm rotors, not the 350mm PCCB available on the non-GT 981/991. Also has GT3 mirrors in R&T pics, yet not in PH ones.

6 speed manual easily fixed with a final ratio change.
