Quick question, tried to find the answer from the DVLA website or Google but no help.

Hoping the answer is simple. Anyway...

I bought a car with a private plate on and agreed that the owner would have the plate back. I have the car currently taxed and insured under the private reg, which it is still wearing.

I am expecting the v5 and new/old number plates any day now. Insurance I can change but do I need to tell the DVLA about the plate change for tax or will they sort it automatically?

I know in the distant past we used to have a piece of paper showing I had paid tax for x vehicle and x reg, so I needed to update it but I don't know and their website doesn't explain (or I couldn't find and explanation) of how it works now.

Logic would say they would know what has happened and change the tax record to reflect the new number plate, but of course applying logic to a government body is a dangerous thing.

All help appreciated!

We had a similar thing in November when we put a private plate on our family car . It had been taxed under the new monthly scheme the previous month , DVLA sorted the paperwork and the car remains taxed, we did nothing extra but strangely the DD still has the ref number of the old registration.

due to the recent change in rules you no longer need to display the VED, so I would assume your 'new' reg is simply updated on the DVLA website and is available to any enforcement bods that VE is paid up etc
