So - it's time to get a new daily driver.

I'm looking for a new daily driver - it doesn't need to be anything too crazy as i've got a fun weekend car in the garage. I'm an ex race-mechanic so any maintenance i'll be doing myself - but i'd prefer not to spend forever maintaining it.

My current car is a faithful 160K automatic Vauxhall Signum cdti that's been spot on over the last 2 years & hasn't cost me a penny other than the normal servicing & has returned 49mpg. Past cars have been an E39 540 (excellent fun but expensive to run) and a number of older Ford's/Peugeot's. I used to do 30k miles a year - but have moved work & only do around 5k-10k nowadays.

What it does need to be is reliable, and have a bit more car car park panache than the current Vauxhall. I like the idea of a crossover with a higher seating position, estate's are also fair game, but i'm also open to regular saloons.

Some non-negotiable must have's:
- Under £10K
- Automatic
- Sat nav
- Cruise control
- 35mpg+ (not fussed if petrol or diesel)
- 5 doors & enough space
- 2007 onwards
- Under 75,000 miles
- Reliable
- Look smart as i spend time in the car with work colleagues
- It doesn't need to be especially quick as I drive like my Nan during the week.

Some of the car's i've thought about:
- Audi A6 estate
- BMW 320D
- Land Rover Discovery 3 (seem pricey to run)
- Nissan Qashqai (look a bit dated & seem quite common)

Would be good to hear of any recommendations & anyone's experiences with the cars you'd recommend.

Adverts of example cars would be nice!

Cheers

Lexus GS450h, if you're considering regular saloons too. You'll struggle to do better for a quality everyday wafter i reckon.

Would love one, but i've got a fun car in the garage - can't have two!

Hadn't even thought of a Superb - excellent suggestion. Hyundai looks smart, and come with quite a good spec. Don't even know what Volvo models are what anymore!

This really, really caught my attention - had no idea they were that cheap & as high spec. Will do some more reading. I'm 90% sold.

From what i understand the 9-5 is similar to the Vectra - which makes it similar to the Signum i've got now & i'm keen for a bit of a change.

Keep the ideas coming!

The Mercedes E Class would be my first choice.

Current shape Citroen C5 2.0 HDI. In my experience, that engine is solidly reliable, the car is a proper wafter with a bit of Gallic flair thrown in. Looks good especially in Exclusive spec with big wheels. Thanks to rampant depreciation you'll be able to snare a decent one.

Or to notch down potentially on the reliability but ten fold up on coolness, how about the C6?
