Anyone plasti dipped their wheels?
Discussion
I know i know wet paint for the best finish, powder coat for durability, but i can't afford the down time with being self employed as I'd be a week without the car.
Just wondering if anyone has done this and how long without needing a touch up barring being kerbed or any tyre changes?
Apparently it can last 1-3 years if it's prepped and applied correctly in enough coats.

Ive done a few of my cars.
You will need to put a top coat on to protect the dip from brake dust... if you dont it discolours very quickly and will not clean back to original condition.
Plastidip sell a proprietary top coat, but it can be hard to get hold of. Generic spray can clear lacquer works great too, but can make the dip harder to remove at a later date.
Tip:
Use playing cards to mask the wheels, it works brilliantly.

The colour Metallic Anthracite is lovely, if you can get hold if it.
Thanks for the info. How long have you had them done? You will need to put a top coat on to protect the dip from brake dust... if you dont it discolours very quickly and will not clean back to original condition.

When you remove the cards did it not pull up any of the covering from the wheels?

6 months+ and about 5k miles.
No, it doesnt pull the dip off when you remove the cards - any significant change in surface profile will provide a clean break to the dip - so the lip between the rim and edge of the playing card is enough to allow you to cleanly peel away the dip.
The same goes for the wheel centres.
Cool. I'm very tempted. Did you just clean the wheels or degrease also before starting? I've done it - I used the black + metalizer. It came out a blueish grey which I think looks amazing.
It lasts really well too - But bare in mind the second you go to get your tyres removed your dip is screwed.
It's also worth noting - Dip and Brake dust stick together really badly so be prepared to be on your knees cleaning them every weekend.
I used 6 cans of black + 4 cans of metalizer just to be extra safe.

Don't plasti dip. Buy one wheel the same and do one wheel at a time with the right stuff. Just wondering if anyone has done this and how long without needing a touch up barring being kerbed or any tyre changes?

I'd agree with both these points, it does take some looking after. It's also worth noting - Dip and Brake dust stick together really badly so be prepared to be on your knees cleaning them every weekend.

Do you need to mask tyres? Nope. Just make sure you get a good amount of paint on them and they'll peal easily
Id counter that advice.I tried that method with my first set of wheels and it took me about 15 hours to peel the over spray off.
Masking with playing cards takes minutes and saves a lot of hassle.
If you need say 6 cans and a metaliser - then according to average ebay pricing you are into £100
Thats about half the cost of a refurbishment that is durable etc
Given what people are saying; it is hard work to keep clean and you can't change a tyre without damaging it what is the point of faffing around with rubber paint?
