Can anyone explain why the difference in the price of petrol and diesel is getting bigger. Most of us can remember when diesel was cheaper than petrol , we were told diesel now has to be more refined so the price went up. Used to be 2 pence per Ltr for ages then 3p then 4p now it is 6 or 7 pence per Ltr dearer. Anyone Know why ?

Demand. Who buys petrol if they are doing alot of miles.
Usually to do with heating oil, which is very similar to diesel, being in more demand in winter (not that it's particularly severe at the moment).
More competition for the fuel drives prices up.
Edit: sorry, didn't read your post properly.
Tax and demand, like has been said.
