What ho chaps.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Smart Forfour please ?

I've been looking in the for sale section on here, and autotrader, fleabay etc.

My wife has a Smart ForTwo, it is the third one we've had in the family, and she loves it, but we could do with something a bit bigger, as I've changed the car for a van, so we now have two, two seaters.

There seems to be a selection of gearboxes, she is very happy with the auto she has, which has the flappy paddles, the ForFour doesn't seem to have these (she leaves it in full auto anyway).

There seem to be three engines, a 1.1, a 1.3, & a 1.5 diesel, I hate diesels as they are ste and unreliable, so that leaves the two petrols to look at.

There seems to be a new one, but our local dealers website says they don't have any, and the 2nd hand ones only seem to go up to about 2007.

So, what do you lot know about these ?

Just as you say, they stopped selling them around 2007

Don't forget they also did a 1.5 petrol in the Brabus, a decent piece of kit (177 bhp and loads of kit)

Otherwise, go for a 1.3 in Passion spec with air con.

From what I remember, the motoring press said that they were okay cars but that many of their rivals were better, such as the Polo, Fiesta, Fabia etc.

As I recall, they share a platform and engines with the Mitsubishi Colt.

Interesting one.

Few people are aware that the Smart For Four and Mitsubishi Colt were sister vehicles. The For Four is absolutely no relation of the more widely recognised Smart range of small city cars.

Rather than me waffling, have a look at this link,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_Forfour

By the way, Mitsubishi Colt was a great little car which didn't achieve sales success in UK.

There is also a 1.5 petrol non-Brabus. Parents have one - surprisingly quick off the mark.

I have 57 plate Turbo Colt (3dr), good little car, 150HP, weighs as much as a fart. Mine is the black hawk with leather and big wheels.

Not sure about the Smart but the colt is quite a nicely designed car, sliding rear seats give lots of rear leg room at the cost of boot space.

Will be for sale soon.

Sir, I have been involved in selling all smarts and their variations since the fortwo was introduced back in 1999.
The ForFour was a tie-up between smart an Mitsubishi and smart seriously thought that they would storm the medium car market with it - and got it TOTALLY wrong. The product was nothing more than ok. It didn't drive/perform/handle/be economical any different to anything else out there made by manufacturers that had been doing it for decades. They quite seriously thought they could take on the giants of the medium car market and make a dent in their sales. In a similar way that Daewoo thought they would make any difference to the small/medium car market with their rubbish products and their blatantly obnoxious advertising back in the 70s and 80s. THEY also got it completely wrong.
The demise of the ForFour then was as a result of all of the above. The product was nothing special but was vastly overpriced. When the accountants turned up at the plant one day and saw fields full of unsold cars, they made a swift decision - stop making them. This decision upset Mitsubishi, (who had a 10 year contract to supply the floor pans and mechanical's), who then insisted that they supply the engines for the new updated ForTwo, (which was demanded from America as the 450 model was such a poor vehicle), hence the reason that the 451 model smart is far superior to it's predecessor.
Back to the ForFour. All the models are of reasonable quality. Forget the 1.1 as it is a poor performer. The others are very capable vehicles. You will only justify a diesel if you do more than 15000 miles a year.
Hope I have been of some use.

Many thanks everyone, she's bought a 1.3 petrol model,56 plate, with the same gearbox setup as her ForTwo.

I've driven it, I was pleased with it, all the quirkyness of a ForTwo, but smoother and in our case now, it will be more useful as it has a backseat.

It may not be better than its rivals, but if it pleases wifey, it pleases me.

Again many thanks, just what PH is for.
