The best all-round tyres for the E89 are the Michelin PSS, everyone agrees, but they don't come in 17" 255/40 and so they're unceremoniously out of the equation. I've suggested Vredestein Sessanta and whilst very good, owners say, these are "mid tier" tyres and not up the Michelin's level.

Any "high level" tyres available in this size (and 17" 225/45 front)? The nearest I can expect is the older Michelin PS...

I've found the Michelin PS3s to be an excellent tyre on my E36 tbh.

PS3 every time. Have a good shop around as prices can vary £30-40 per corner. Also try and and swap them back to front every 5000 miles as I found this can prolong the life considerably

AD08R? OK it's not goin to match a PS3 on standing water but it's better than you'd expect and it's in a different league to even the PSS in the dry. I've run AD07s (same tread pattern, slightly different compound) daily for the last six years with no complaints. smile

Otherwise, I prefer Eagle F1s to PS3s but realy that's just a question of whether you prefer soft or hard sidewalls.

Eagle F1. About 30% cheaper than PS3s last time I looked. Pretty much the same in the dry. Much better in the wet. Last longer. Less road noise. Better ride. You lose a little feel thanks to the softer sidewall but that's the only downside.

Great tyre. Make an Evo handle better, not an easy thing to do!

Not Bridgestones, wheel spin is driving me mad at the moment in my Golf! Don't seem able to cope with the torque.

Continental Sport Contact 5 seems to do rather well in the EVO tyre test each year. I think in the last three years it's come first twice.

I think a lot of Hondas are set up for stiff sidewalls and aren't that happy on the F1s - they didn't give me much confidence.

Had F1s on my '02 Accord Type-S and they were superb.

I had them on the NSX and it seemed to take a while to settle at the back in corners so went back to RE050s

Continental Sport Contact. I've owned most of the tyres mentioned so far and the only ones that impressed were the conti.

Full disclosure: Eagle F1 and Michelin Puppet Sport on a Boxster. Continental Sports on a Cayman. Only downside is the conti are louder.

Not strictly what you've asked but consider Barum. I've used them on track in 225/45/17 and they've been superb with both FWD & RWD cars. Good dry & wet grip, decent wear, reasonable tyre noise.

£95 per corner all-in. When I replace it's what I always get for my daily car.

Can't claim to know much about tyres, but recently got a pair of these fitted on the front of my Accord and they feel fantastic. 215/45/r17, so a very similar size to the OP.

Thanks everyone.

I've always considered ultimate tyre choice to be subjective, car-to-car, conditions-to-conditions, driver-to-driver. The only surefire way to know what I prefer is test them all, but obviously that's a richer man's game.

To be honest it comes down to which name sounds, and what tread pattern looks, cooler, really wobble

Apart from the Sessantas I'll probably consider The Goodyear Eagles or Michelin PS3...

Moved from PSS to Goodyear AS2 on my ZT as the PSS seem to crab on tight reversing (which I do to get out my drive). I have used the AS2 on other cars and liked the feedback. Now PSS is the sticker tyre no question but noiser and less feedback than the AS2. So for me I will not be moving back to the PSS any time soon.

PS the wife has AS2 on her mini and over a number of weeks said she was enjoying driving the car much more, she thinks tyres are round and thats. Was on the original Goodyears before but not AS2's. I have Conti 5 on my Fiesta Ecoboost and will be moving to AS2 can't say anymore really.

I've been really impressed with the Hankook Ventus V12s. My E36 isn't worth spending massive amounts on tyre-wise and when I couldn't find Falken 452s any more I thought I'd give the Hankooks a try. Better than the Falken imo.

I've also gone through loads of premium tyres on other cars including Bridgestone Potenzas, Michelin Pilot Sport 2s, Conti SportContact 3s and a few others - and I rate the Hankooks highly in comparison.
