Hi,

I was adjusting the power steering box on my jeep to get rid of play, anyhow i stupidly tightened the lock nut too tight and now its spinning on its thread, and advice on best way to fix this, if i put a washer on so it tightens before it reaches the stripped threads will that help, or are there better ways?

Here's a video of what i was trying to do if that helps ... i'm a bit of a novice so any advice appreciated.

If there's enough good thread left, a thick washer might work. Otherwise you could try retapping it with the original thread size. If that doesn't work, you'll have to tap a smaller thread onto it and fit a smaller nut.

Is it the nut or the shaft that the threads have stripped?

get a new nut and use the old one as your washer

Probably this is the only easy option, as having stripped the threads you may well find that the nut won't come out now. If there is enough exposed thread, that is.

When you say locknut, is is a second nut for locking against the first, or is it a nyloc? If its a nyloc it might be worth checking you haven't damaged the nylon bit - put some thread lock on if it looks dodgy.
