Hi folks,

I bought my trolley jack while at university some... let's just say more than 20 #cough#... years ago.

It was getting a bit wheezy lifting my 3 series and struggling to get much higher than tyres more than about an inch off the ground. Now I've sold the BM and bought a Grand Vitara, and the sills on the this start at the same sort of height the BMW had to reach!

So, where's got decent quality with reasonable prices for something that'll lift the Vit and maybe last another quarter of a century?

I asked similar a little while back, and was pointed to SGS.

I'm very happy indeed with the 2t low-profile I got, and it'll go high enough to lift my s3 Landy.

They look good smile

(BTW, before anyone chimes in, I do know the jacking points on a GV are on the chassis, not the sills wink )

Another thumbs up for SGS.

I have their low entry 3 ton jack. Goes under my e36 328 fine and still goes high enough to get my lifted Discovery 2 of the ground.

Arse.

I wanted the jack as I noticed a bit of excess wear on the shoulder of my front left tyre. It was running a couple of psi down so pumped it back up, but realised I'd need a new jack to rotate the tyres (they needed rotating anyway as there's more tread on the backs than on the fronts).

The brake caliper on that wheel started sticking today - steering wobble, "hot brakes" smell, hot wheel frown

Now I really need a new jack!

I'm extra annoyed as my last car seized the caliper on the front driver's side (twice!), too.

Once I get the wheel off, might see if I can get away with just cleaning up the sliders...

Anyhow, looking at that 3 tonne low-profile, it is £50 more than the SGS normal 3 tonner which I had mostly decided upon, but it does look like if I get that I'll never need to buy another jack, for any job, forever. Man maths says the normal one was a bit tight to fit under my wife's Aygo anyway wink

Tine to get ordering, I think.

Mine's arrived now, and the Vitara is high in the air (hail coming down on the snow has convinced me actually taking the brakes apart can wait a day or two) with no problem at all.

The thing is seriously huge! The pictures need something to give scale, I'd say an elephant would be about right. It's now my new favourite tool and anyone who has one of these in the garage gets approx +1,000,000 man points (and another 500,000 if you carry it about rather than rolling it wink ).
Also, clearly well made and engineered, I like the roller bearings pushing the pump rods getmecoat

Anyhow, virtual pints to you guys who pointed me in the right direction, cheers!

I have no need for a jack but that low profile 3 ton jack will no doubt be purchased on payday! Looks epic. Should also make jacking both axles at the same time much easier.

The Arcan? I have one and it is very good at lifting 875kg of car!

I've got the Arcan too, it's excellent. Gets underneath the MR2 no problem to both jacking point on the subframe or axle but is able to lift very high. The "cup" is good too.

I had issues with delivery from SGS enginnering, don't know if it's a regular thing but put me right off. Took me 4 weeks to get the crane I ordered on 2 day delivery due to terrible packaging (really, a 3t crane in just a thin carboard box with the nuts and bolts left loose in the box?... as you can guess, it burst and my bolts were lost) and then really poor service afterwards. Refused to send any of the missing bolts for the crane until I had either returned the few I had or gave them an exact list of what I needed.
Made the list up and they sent NONE of what was on the list, loose, in a cardboard box that then got burst open in transit again. We had 3 attempts at it all from start to finish.
Eventually got my bolts for the crane and I'm left with a bunch that aren't even for that crane. Was a bit of a fiasco to be honest, but some of it may be down to the courier they use. Although no excuse for the way things were packaged.

Its even got 'Dual pumps for rocket lift" - how cool is that?

I don't often need to lift a rocket, but its good to know I can should I ever need to

The SIP jack is nowhere near it (not low entry for a start); the Arcan one is similar in appearance but doesn't look to have the sheer build behind it and is, indeed, only 2T rated.

I haven't got rid of it, but it has been... demoted. Falling oil level, failing seals, who knows? More fun (and safer) to buy a monster new one wink

I'm not sure how much the it is on Costco now, but mine is the Arcan XL35, rated to 3.5T.

Mine was next day as promised by the website and well packaged. I hope not to have to use their customer service any further than that...
