RE: £100K Garage: Sam Doran
Monday 12th January 2015

Name: Sam Doran
Previously owned: Land Rover Lightweight Air Portable, Lancia Delta HF Turbo ie, Saab 99, Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI, Alfa Romeo 164 Twin Spark, Toyota Celica GT, Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon (JDM), Subaru Legacy 2.5 AWD, Volvo S60 D5 SE, Range Rover Vogue 4.6, Subaru Impreza Wagon PPP, Audi A6 2.5TDI Quattro Avant, Fiat Punto, VW Touareg, Audi A3 2.0 TFSI Quattro Sportback S Line, Skoda Fabia vRS, Audi A4 3.0 TDI Quattro S Line.
Currently owned: 2002 Audi S3, 2007 VW Golf 2.0 TDI GT Sport 170
On the shortlist: Audi B7 RS4 Avant
Cost: £54,995
Balance: £45,005
Why I chose it: "Just look at it! It looks so purposeful. You can hear the rasp of that engine running twin Dellortos coming out of that single angled exhaust as it's caned down a country road, or reverberating off city buildings at lower speeds. It looks fast without even moving. It's a simply beautiful piece of design and you're probably never going to pass another one out there. Fabulous car."
Cost: £11,850
Balance: £1,205
Why I chose it: "This era of Audis do what they do in a very modest, predictable and accomplished way. This S4 is in a nice colour combination and has a manual gearbox again which goes nicely with the 4.2 V8. A nice sleeper car, apart from the exhaust which seems to protrude from the bumper a bit too much. A good car for belting through France on holiday without drawing too much attention.

A gorgeous Alfa takes half of Sam's budget, with just enough left for a Jag MkII and an Audi S4

Alfa Romeo Junior GTA Evocazione
Cost: £54,995

Jaguar MkII
Cost: £31,950
Balance: £13,055
Why I chose it: "British Racing Green? Check. Cream leather? Check. Wire wheels? Check. Not a MkII for the purists perhaps but a Jag 4.5 in that body with a manual gearbox..."
Audi S4 Avant
Cost: £11,850
Balance: £1,205
Why I chose it: "This era of Audis do what they do in a very modest, predictable and accomplished way. "The £1,205 left over would replace the questionable exhaust on the S4 with a nice Milltek one!"
Discussion
Certainly original.
55k on one car, well you must really love it.
Jag. great never see the point of leaving these cars in the year they were built unless you want to show it are a "real enthusiast" or wish spend a great deal of time underneath it with hand in wallet. Great choice.
S4 stealthy, practical and 4wd, great.

Could never understand why fake GTA's often go for up to 10 times the price of a still gorgeous Junior ?.......A fake one remember.
Hexagon is the last place to look for a bargain, their GTA rep is about twice the going rate. This one looks good and would leave plenty of change for a better Audi or another car http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...Love the alfa, although the prices of these non original "evocazione" repros are getting silly. Mk2 jag's got style and I can see the point of a utilitarian barge like the audi although the latter wouldn't necessarily be my choice. Originality? Hmm...If I were viewing these purely as an investment then originality might be important, but would you by a Georgian house to live in and keep the lead plumbing just to preserve originality? Oh, nice car history, by the way!
