Porsche 911 Targa GTS - Detroit 2015

Porsche offers 991 'megamix' with GTS spec Targa while Cayenne Turbo gains 'S', horsepower and hefty pricetag

We'll start with a double entendre: Porsche has been exploring niches again, with the Detroit motor show giving debuts for both the 911 Targa 4 GTS and the new Cayenne Turbo S.

Needs a big bum for that badge...
Needs a big bum for that badge...
Meaning that those internet rumours we were going to see the GT3 RS here proved wide of the mark - anticipate that one for the Geneva show in March. But you'd be hard pressed to argue that the two new models don't both mark sensible strategic steps for Porsche.

The Targa 4 GTS is pure Dr. Frankenstein model planning: the GTS's more powerful 424hp engine, standard Sport Chrono package and design tweaks crossed with the Targa 4's magic sliding roof and four-wheel drive system. Buyers will be able to choose between a manual transmission and PDK, with the auto giving a 4.1-sec 0-60mph time and a 186mph top speed. Or, if you prefer, a very round all-rounder. The official line is that it's been built to celebrate the Targa's 50th anniversary, and it will cost £104,385 when it goes on sale in the UK in March.

That's 2015's most offensive car tied up then

The Cayenne Turbo S is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, an S-ed version of the already mega-quick Cayenne Turbo. And a clear statement from Stuttgart that its not going to surrender its fastest SUV credentials without a battle. Power goes up to 561hp, accompanied by 590lb ft of torque, and although the straight line performance figures are impressive (or scary) enough - 176mph flat-out and a 3.8-sec 0-60mph time - the Turbo S's most intimidating stat is a claimed 7:59.74 Nordschleife lap time. That's right: this is the sub-8 minute SUV. Or, to put it another way, a 2.2-tonne off-roader that gets within three seconds of the time recorded by the 996 GT3 back in 1999, as ridiculous as that sounds. It's also a fair bit quicker than the Range Rover Sport SV-R... The Cayenne Turbo S goes on sale later in the spring and will cost £118,455.

There are times when I find the whole mega-sport-SUV hilarious, and there would be alot of fun in obliterating almost every other driver on the road.. But surely none of those Cayennes (or the RRS SVR) will ever get used anywhere near to their ability? Suppose it gives the show car some go credibility, but it sounds like an expensive (and rather ugly in my opinion) way to get yourself into a car that will inevitably be used to pose.

Going back to the initial statement, it'd be fun to own one for a few days... but it seems like a waste of money in my eyes!

Right, because owners of bonafide Supercars don't use them to pose, and are always using them to their full performance capabilities.

I have a SC Range Rover, and that is very quick. Why you would want anything faster in an SUV I Do not know....however on the other hand.......why not?

Both pretty horrible. Porsche, more now than ever, need a real change. The 991 is just... totally plain.

Especially with the forthcoming Cayman GT4, they really now need a mid-engined model to slot below the 918 but above the 911. That would be a very special beast.

Agreed, the car looks awesome but the badges are getting ridiculous.

911 GTS, that's all it needs to say. No PORSCHE, no TARGA that's obvious stuff that doesn't need stating.

The 4, does that need advertising to the world, those in the know can see the wide band rear deflector which differentiates the 4-wheel drive models from the 2.

911 GTS job done.

I like it a lot. If I'm going to have one car only, a manual Targa GTS would also be the pick of the Porsche line for me.

Targa GTS ? That's blinkin lovely....not really a fan of the regular 991 but I like the look of both the GTS and the Targa so a blend of the two gets my vote!

As for a Sub 4.0 sec SUV....just mental! And also faintly ridiculous. Will we get to a stage where the weight of a car like that will actually be a benefit off the line because it can get ludicrous power outputs down on tarmac better than a light 2wd RWD car ? Wouldn't mind betting that it can beat a few performance cars 0-30 whilst they struggle to get off the line. That would make an interesting video!

Almost, but not quite. Just GTS please. Pretty obvious it's a 911, so simpler the better, ie Carrera 2, GT3, turbo, etc.

Anyone know the release date for the much rumoured Cayenne GT2 RS cabrio?

You don't have to have the badge, they'll leave it off if you ask or you can have just "911" on the back for a fee.

Loving the GTS Targa, white with black wheels please!

Agreed on the Targa - gone from the runt of the bunch to the best of the bunch in 1 generation!

I get to £115k on the targa 4gts. It doesn't help that it starts at the other side of 100k. Lovely car though, pick of the 911 versions for me.

Suppose may be easier to leave the price tag on? smile

Cayennes are just getting ludicrously pointless. As are all other performance SUVs. What next, Transit vans doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds?
