So I happen to have come across a spare £2000 and have decided instead of putting it in a bank I would like to invest in a second car!

I have a Clio 182 as a daily so something to compliment that might be nice, ideally whatever I buy needs to hold its value or increase in value!

Where would you put your money?

Going on from this week's SoTW, something like a Corrado VR6 might work?

IMO the words "car" and "invest" never sit happily in the same sentence!

I think an early 90's Vauxhall SRi/GTE might be ones to watch. You never see any around any more and their prices are still low. The rarity will push up the prices soon because they are still at risk of being scrapped at their current value. The Astra GTE 16v's seem to be increasing in value already - if you can find a clean Nova GTE/SR/SRi or Cavalier GSi/SRi then I suspect you won't lose much.

A big bumper Mk2 Golf GTi might be a safer bet but a little boring and prediactable (the choice, not the car).

None of the above will light your fire as much as the 182 though! Go for a Peugeot GTi if you want it to be comparable. Decent 205's are still available for £2000. The 309's are, for some reason, going a but nuts these days. A 405 Mi16 may be another to consider.

Oh, and a R5GTT might be a good one to complement the Clio, although I haven't checked their prices for some time.

Very much so! Online poker would be a better bet. That or Bitcoin.

They do if you do your research and buy the right car at the right time. Have a look on the Porsche forum for example.

Just an idea but could sell the 182 and pool the resources?

At this price point that is very true.
A mk1 mx5 would be a good punt. Keep it rust free and it should only gain value.

A clean, rust free MX5 might be difficult to find.
An Unmolested MX5 might be difficult to find.
But a rusty, molested MX5 will definately not lose a penny.

- note that my wife insisted we buy a mk1 mx5 5.5 years back, and so far it's worth about 1/3 of what it cost plus the money I've spent on it. That said every single mile has been a joy. So as an investment in JOY it's not bad.

I've got a 182 also... You'll need that £2k to keep it going!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Some good stuff I haven't thought of!

I love the Clio to much to pool it and touch wood mine has been very reliable!

I am very much leaning towards a Corrado VR6 if I can find one, so the hunt begins..

Unless anyone has any further suggestions of course?

Had a rust-free manual UK mk1 MX5 a couple of years ago bought for just over £1K. Should have kept it. Black with tan leather, thick folder of history... damn.

I think the 80s/ 90s hot hatches (Nova/ Astra GTE/ mk1 Golf) are a great shout. Not sure if genuine clean examples can be found sub £2K (they can in my mind!), but they will be going up tomorrow.

Corrado kinda fits that category, but it seems to me that there are more of them available. Also doesnt do much for me, was always 'the other guys car' but I do get the appeal.

E36 M3s are probably more (£3K+?), but it seems to me that this generation M3 is starting to lose its 'unloved' status and being seen as the fast, capable car that it is. /DRIVE are fond of them, and they are usually ahead of the curve imho.

Aren't there old front-engined Porsches (eg 944s) available around £2K? Surely enough of them are dying off now to become desirable?

Mk1 Imprezas (bear with me) can't be that far off becoming collectible. A looked-after, stock Turbo 2000 might have some value in the not-too-distant... The hotter models will be out of budget or tuned imports, so I can see the early UK ones starting to appeal.

How about Peugeot 106/306 GTi/Rallyes? Again, not sure if they are quite £2K material, but given the love for the old 205 these could do well.

Probably pushing my luck with the Accord Type R, but they have a strong fanbase and while they're no DC2 Integra, they are 'proper' Honda Type Rs.

Not sure that any of the above are particularly smart investments, but suspect that most are not going to depreciate further, and they'll be enjoyable toys on a limited mileage.

Peugeot 106 Gti/Rallye.

A few years ago there were around 20 of these for sale on PH, most of which were under £1000. There is now 2 or 3 at best.

I bought an R Reg GTI on 85k for £940 2 years ago. After 10 months I sold it for £1500 on over 100k. The same car now would be worth closer to £2500. Give it a few years and they will peak at around £3000/4000 the Rallyes probably slightly more.

It's also a very similar drive to your 182 smile

E36 328i sports are going up in price quite rapidly, I reckon if you are willing to take on a project buy a ropey one and get it in nice condition. Especially the manual models.
