Sorry for another what to get post but I've been procrastinating about what cars to get for a while. One will be a daily driver and the other for weekend blasts and track days. Neither really needs to be practical but both need to be fun.

Ideally the daily driver needs to be reliable , economical and fun to use at lower speeds. I have been using an A4 TDi as a daily but its just so boring I dread driving it. Would ideally like a roadster as the weekend / second car. I'm currently budgeting £7k for both but this could rise to £11k so need recommendations for both budgets.

For 7k I was thinking of a Clio 182 Cup or a Smart Roadster as a daily (around £3k) and a super charged MX5 for weekends / track use (around £4k) or vice versa.

For 11k was thinking of a VX220 for weekends (around 7k) and a Megane R26 as a daily?

For once I'd say you've pretty much nailed it as OP (for both £7 and £11K budgets!).

Not fond of the Smart roadster, but they have a fairly loyal fanbase who swear by them, so there's something good in them.

The modified mk1 MX5 will be extremely hard to beat, maybe make that your 2nd car for both budgets? I've owned 2 (neither turbo/ supercharged) and they were as much fun as any of the 'better' more expensive metal Ive owned. A bit of FI (with appropriate brakes/ suspension mods essential imho!) will be massively entertaining, but at my ability level would require extreme care.

Clio 182 will provide great daily thrills, but will be pretty compromised in comparison to an A4. I'd look for something a little larger/ more refined.

Boxster 986 (2.7 or S, manual) would be worth considering as an alternative to the MX5. Mid-engined is good, and again your spot-on with the VX220.

Looks like your on the right track whichever way you go, good luck!

How about this as a 7k combo:

Daily: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-325i-M-sport-2003-/2...

Track:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E36-M3-Road-legal-track-car-/261719997659?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3cefba3cdb

11k Daily: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-56-Skoda-Octavia-2-...

Track: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-968-3-0-1993-K-/...

a bit of haggling & they're you're for 11k the 968 is a great track car & an appreciating asset

Had various combinations in my head during the last month including a MKV Golf GTI and MK3 MR2, S2000 and E46 330, Civic Type R and 986 Boxster S.

There's quite a bit of choice when thinking about it but usually seem to come back to a hot hatch and roadster combi.

Would a Clio 182 and VX220 be too much alike?

No, but I'd get a more boring and cheaper to run daily to be honest.
