This collection was won in 1989 as part of a VH1 competition. However, in the US you are responsible for the tax on any prize and the winner could not afford to pay the tax bill so never picked them up. The collection an example from every model year from 1953 to 1989 was stored in a garage in Manhattan until the taxes could be resolved. They are now being released for the first time and will be restored by a new owner.

Strange story - surely the original owner could have sold some of them to raise the tax required to keep the rest?

The story doesn't mention tax, only that they were bought from the prize winner then pretty much left untouched.

Still. Cool.

I linked to only one of the sources on the story. I had heard about these cars previosuly from another article which said that the tax burden on the original owner was going to be over $200k to accept the prize so he sold them on to the artist. The artist has a very murky history with scamming people so we will never find out the whole truth of the story.
