due to a sorry chapter in my past, I have ended up with almost as many points as a hedgehog on my licence (12)
endorsements are as follows:

ms90, 31/7/10 6 pts
cu80, 17/6/11 3 pts
cu80, 24/3/14 3 pts

the insurers I have spoken to want 5 years history of endorsements and nearly a grand to insure me,( third party only) on a £500 Rover 827auto!

I'm 48, self employed, not made a claim of any sort in over ten years (last one wasn't my fault, in 2004), due to being on company insurance for over ten years and only having classic policies, I have only got one years no claims bonus.....

is there such a thing as sensible insurance premiums for some one in my shoes?

thanks Mark

I think £1000 is pretty good to be honest. With 12 points you were lucky not to be banned.

I think to an insurance company you sound like an accident waiting to happen.

£1k seems pretty reasonable to me with 12 points and little ncb?

If you get a letter off your company's insurers (or broker) saying how long you've been claim free, many insurers will allow that. It's routine for ex-company car drivers.

Also fully comp is often cheaper than 3rd party.

With that MS90, I'm surprised anyone will give you insurance.

Given the track record, I think that is quite cheap when you compare it to what younger and point-free drivers are faced with.

Exactly.

As usual, more to the story than we're being told.

MS90 was for not identifying the driver of the vehicle with regards to a speeding offence (34 in a 30), apparently, it happened around the time I lost my job, house was repossessed and sofa surfed for a year or so...I didn't know anything about it till I applied for a replacement licence as mine had gone adrift.

Exactly what I was thinking. Young drivers can end up paying well over twice that amount, justified by being an unknown risk. Paying less than half what they pay with 12 points on your licence seems like a bit of a bargain, given the circumstances.

I haven't found a broker/company that will accept this as I wasn't a "named" driver, just on a general all employee policy

The first CU was mildly amusing, my phone was ringing constantly whilst in a traffic jam , so I turned it off, the bloke in black, on a white motorbike thought it constituted "using" a mobile device whilst driving and gave me a notice of impending prosecution ( I think that's what it was called, it advised to do nothing till I heard from them, unfortunately I moved around a lot at that time and only received bundles of mail periodically. I didn't get the opportunity to either pay the FP or challenge it in court.

How does the cost compare to something smaller and slower (a Rover 827 is cheap but not slow)?

Pick a Peugeot 306diesel or similar for comparison? But I guess you are going to be in the >£500 bracket no matter what you are in.

To be fair only 6 are current for totting up purposes.

I work for a broker who specialise in a whole range of policies, and we have our own convicted team who can probably do something for you.

irritatingly all of the companies I have tried want 5 year disclosure, even if I have the points taken off my licence I still have to declare them

Think I'd be tempted to wait until August 1st when you no longer have to declare those first 6 points as they're more than 5 years old to be honest.
