Afternoon all,

The decrease in the quality of Mercedes engineering and build quality in the late 90’s has been discussed at length in the media and on various forums. I recall seeing reports that Mercedes cut their profit margins around 2005 / 2006 in an effort to restore the quality of engineering that they had once been famous for.

Have they succeeded? Are current Mercedes cars better engineered and built than their rivals?

They stopped rusting as badly, is what I understand of it.

I think MB in general don't run their production car engineering as close to the state of the art as some of the other prestige brands; the only exception to this I can think of is the engine in the AMG45.

You don't see them wringing 381bhp out of a 3 litre diesel, the way BMW do.

Also one of few car companies left who fully develop their own transmissions in-house (using BMW as an example, they tend to buy them in from ZF).

None of this really answers your question. You'd need someone with several MB's versus several other cars to really know what's what: a fleet manager or someone like that.

Drive round Heathrow, Gatwick, London City and see what you see most of being used a chauffeur vehicles. There is a reason for that.

Go to mainland Europe and you will see the same thing.

Chauffeur cars have always been mercs nothing new there, was the same back in the good old days of 124,s and 140,s
I'm sure they are better now because let's face it they couldn't of got much worse could they
But I'm sorry they still are not built anything like a wdb 124 and probably never wil be that era has long gone and is the same for all cars , l but I'm glad your car has been faultless

It's not been faultless, I had the centre arm rest and surrounding console changed under warranty because the rubberised coating was coming off in a couple of places wink

The build quality on my 2005 E class is worlds apart from my plasticky and rattle prone Cayman - if they have got even better in the last 10 years then they must be superb now. I understand the bad period was the few years from 1998 to circa 2004 - that's what I tell myself anyway!

A bit more, it was 7 months old when I bought it with 10k miles on it, so about 75k. I was doing 95 k per year but am trying to cut back a bit, but it pays the bills wink

In the first year of a cars release, the car isn't expected to be the best and it may have some problems. These are refined in the later models which I think may be the case for your friends mothers C Class. My car hasn't had any problems yet, even after ripping apart the car to retrofit Burmester/3D still hasn't had a single problem.

Well mine rattles worse than a container full of rattle snakes and started rattling straight after delivery. It has been back to the dealers a couple of times for them to attempt various fixes, only minor improvements.....

The engineering may well be excellent and material surfaces generally feel nice but interior figment curtainly is not excellent, not that it was anything special only a A45.
