Transferring a private plate

I have a question about transferring a private number plate. Here's the scenario.

I have a car that I currently own that has my private plate on it. Soon I will want to buy a used car and part-exchange my current car with the private plate on it.

However, I also want the private plate to be transferred to the used car that I will buy.

What's the easiest way to achieve the above? Is this something that the used car dealer can do for me?

They can sort it for you but it's easier if you transfer it off yourself and put it onto retention. When you buy the new car they can use this to start the transfer onto your new car.

The dealer can also sell your part ex on straight away rather than having to wait for the paperwork to come through so it'll make it more attractive to them.

It used to be instant in the old days of local offices but now it will take a couple of weeks for the paperwork to sort out.

Golden rule of keeping a private plate is to put it onto retention before you put the car up for sale.
