SEAT Leon Cupra ST price confirmed

Range-topping 280 version only for the UK, kicking off at £28K appropriately enough

Nothing like a bit of corporate arrogance to stoke up a rivalry, correct? Here's SEAT's view on the new Leon ST Cupra 280: "SEAT's latest model can lay claim to having arguably no direct hot estate rival for the money. On paper, its closest mass market competitor is the Ford Focus ST-3. However, not only is it outgunned by 30hp in the performance stakes, the Blue Oval's challenger also comes with significantly less equipment." Miaow.

Repeat after me: not a rival, not a rival, not a...
Repeat after me: not a rival, not a rival, not a...
We'll be sure to test that soon with both cars launched within weeks of each other over the next month. The news today of the SEAT is a UK price and specification. The sole 280 model offered here will cost from £28,505 as a manual and £29,860 with the DSG 'box, both representing a £995 jump over the equivalent hatch as expected.

Amusingly the Performance Pack really is available on the estate and is being marketed as the 'Sub8 Performance Pack'. Sounds like a challenge... Don't forget to budget £460 for Pilot Sport Cup 2s for a proper 'ring warrior. Then there are the Black-, Orange- and White-Line packs at £500 and the bucket seats at £1,250.

Could be an interesting estate spec!
Could be an interesting estate spec!
With the Performance Pack and the tyres, a manual Leon estate (the 'ring record car wasn't DSG, remember) would be £30,990. Let's hope someone specs one this way, with the orange wheels too just for full effect.

While SEAT may not think so, the VW Golf R estate will surely be a rival for the Cupra wagon. A five-door Golf R hatch is £30,805 and in the lower ranks of the Golf range the estate equivalent carries a £695 range. That would put a Golf R estate at £31,500, or near enough £3K beyond the SEAT. Full details expected on that soon. The SEAT is available to order now, we're driving it next month and the car will be at showrooms in March. If you can't wait until then to have a poke around, the Cupra will be at the Daily Telegraph Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show at the ExCel from 12-15 February.

I'd like a closer look at this but won't be visiting the Adventure Travel Show again since it felt like paying to visit a travel agent last time I went (not sure what this car has to do with adventure travel anyway).

I just hope the increased body size doesn't effect the chassis balance too much because the hatch is a nice drive, especially for a FWD car.

It's not up on the SEAT configurator yet by the way.

The soon-to-be ubiquitous Golf R estate will no doubt be the better buy (or lease) thanks to the expected residuals.

If the broker discounts on the hatch are anything to go by, then this will be available for £25k.

It's a handsome, practical, very well equipped, quick and well made estate car, but doesn't have a German badge so will get overlooked by most, their loss.

The Focus has less power, but with discounts on both is still probably £2-3k cheaper, with which you can add options and a Mountune performance upgrade!

I agree the Golf R would be a better car, but on my business lease terms at the moment the 5dr hatch Golf R is around £50 per month more than the 5dr Cupra 280. We'll see what happens over the next few months though.

Every time a fast Ford is mentioned it takes 30 seconds before you hear 'Mountune' its a pity Ford can't make them right first time around.

Well, to be honest 250BHP is about enough in a FWD! I only mentioned because for a similar price they can be comparable power and spec-wise.

It's a shame those buckets and brembo's aren't standard.

If you add those (1250 + 2025) you have a car that's more than a golf R. It's hard to see why anyone would order a leon with those options if its more than a golf R that has more power and 4wd?

.. unless dealers are going to offer sizable discounts maybe?

Maybe somebody who really doesn't want a Golf? R or not?

And exclusivity, there are 4 Golf R hatches for every one Leon Cupra on the road. 1,600 verses 380.

An ST-3 estate can be bought for £21.3k, however if you go for an ST-1 estate you only pay £18.1k which is a bargain for the performance in my opinion. 250PS is more than enough for road use.

The ST-1 is £23,295
The ST-3 is £27,095.

Are you presuming that you can get that much money off of them?

The prices I've quoted are from the Drive The Deal website.

No worries. They tend to be very competitive on new Fords. I've been keeping a close eye of ST prices as I really fancy a facelifted Focus ST hatchback.

ST Cupra DSG with Sub8 performance pack is being quoted at just over £26k on DTD, hefty discount, and makes it much more appealing...
