I dont know if its me but nice cars no longer stand out like they used to before. I can remember when have a newish sporty car really stood out and turned heads. In years gone by your average older car had black bumpers etc and nothing else was colour coded. They looked very basic inside out and had no extras such as electric windows etc, they also often had tiny wheels with wheel trims.
Now even bog standard cars look fairly sporty with sporty colour coded bumpers, alloys, sports seats, alloys etc. The top versions look better but do not stand out like they used to compared to bottom models.

Also new cars now seem ten a penny and this includes previous higher end brands such as bmw/audi, I dont know if this just down to a more cars on finance/cheap lease deals.

All im trying to say is that I dont think having a nice high spec cars stands out like it used to for the reasons mentioned above, what are other peoples thoughts.

Standards these days are extremely high. Kias and Hyundais are good looking things which are generally well screwed together. Add to this the point you've already made about very few people buying cars and instead effectively renting them at low rates watch don't really increase if you have the bodykit and the big wheels and you're away.
I'd guess, but don't know that the NCAP crash safety regulations have also removed a great deal of the properly st cars from dealerships and the general public.

Manufacturers style bottom of the range models to look more like top of the range models so that people who can only afford the bottom of the range appear more wealthy than they really are. It's called vanity.

Why is that a problem?
Where did he say it was one?

I am with the op here growing up a a kid looking out the car window on a journey you could identify most cars. When a jag went past or a chevette hse or an auid quattro etc etc.Now it seems most cars look exactly the same and share the same body

The only new car that stands out for me when I'm driving is the GT86/BRZ. Such a beautiful car compared to the sea of hideous german blandness otherwise wafting about.

Hi thanks for the replies

Ive no problem at all with it, I was just seeing if people felt the same or just because im getting older.

Years ago if there was a high end model it seemed people looked at it as something special, these days it seems every other car is a 13/14 audi etc with nice kit and wheels so they just don't look as special.

A bizarre obsession with ordering new cars in grey doesn't help.

Really? Most mainstream stuff looked the same then surely, eg Avenger, Escort, Hunter, Marina

The thing is you could tell the cars apart nowadays so many cars look very very similar ?

I agree he current crop of Kia/Hyundai etc look really modern and up there with other makes, but it nice they're replaced by the next model, doesn't the previous model look really old and dated fast..

Audi, BMW etc tend to grow old a bit more gracefully.

A problem in the sense of something that needs a solution.

Why pose the question if you don't want an answer?
When you want an opinion? A question doesn't automatically have to concern an issue, or problem, to be valid.

FWIW - I agree with the OP. Mainstream cars now are a loss less distinguishable from each other than they used to be, which is a pity for those who are interested in cars, but I don't really have any issues with it, so long as there's still some cars that stand out (some good examples given above).

The fact that there's a lot less disparity in the overall quality of cars, partly from so much platform-sharing, is also a good thing, but inevitably the cosmetic design goes the same way - less individualised.

I think colour has a lot to do with it these days - Its a sea of silver, greys, blacks and whites out there - I drive a turquoise coloured car and the number of people that comment on how nice the colour is amazes me sometimes. The car is from 1999 and the colour options included turquoise, saffron orange, bright red, metallic purple etc - although my car's colour is far from radical it does seem to really stand out - none of the colours on the 99 model year were available on its replacement

Truly special cars still have an impact. I saw a Maserati GT glide past a couple of years ago and it stood out so starkly that I'm talking about it on a net forum two years later.

I'm not sure it's really ever been any different. With a few notable exceptions, the mainstream cars of any era generally all looked the same.

Actually that is kind of true I think. When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s I could instantly recognise almost any mainstream car from a quick glance. These days I find it quite hard to tell a Focus from an Astra from a Kia Ceed etc. but maybe that's because I take less interest in cars now generally. It's the same with the "big 4" Japanese sportsbikes in fact.

The only one that stood out for me recently was a red Tesla S driving through Bakewell, blew all the German stuff out of the water in terms of road presence and actually looking interesting.
