Getting a Car Legally On the Road Again
Discussion
Well after 16 months , my mate is getting his car back on the road. He lost his license due to a heart condition and now its under control, he is waiting for an envelope from the DVLA to say 'off you go'
We started his car today after 16 months sat on the drive and pumped the tyres, freed the brakes and ready to go. We obviously need an MOT, so what is the law on , after getting a pre booking for this, then hopefully passing. Does the DVLA get immediate knowledge of it passing, so buy his VED while at the garage, or does he need to drive to the nearest post office, with all his docs ?
Cheers for any help.

Hmmm...tricky. Doesn't come up on PH much more than every other week.

(short answer - drive to MOT, pass or fail MOT, drive home. If passed - tax by phone or online. If fail, fix and rebook MOT and repeat previous sequence).

Ooops, should have hit the search button. I am guessing we will need to possibly go to the post office, as I am sure there is no phone signal at the garage, thinking about it. Cheers.
Don't. The legislation only allows you to drive to the MOT station and then home or to a place of repair. No other stops allowed. Take it home and tax it there.(ETA: it MUST, of course, be insured before you start the journey to the MOT station and should be in a roadworthy condition)
