Accident just before insurance renew
Discussion
Hi,
Here is the situation. My multi car insurance policy comes to an end in a few weeks and I’ve had the usual daft renew quote from the company. I had started to look around and I can get two separate policies with equal or better cover. I was all set for the cancellation with current provider and start two new ones with another supplier.
Then a call from the Mrs to say that she’s been hit by a lorry in her car whilst sat in a queue. Lorry driver stopped, helped tape up the parts that were hanging off, handed over all his details and exchanged insurance details. Perfect. We call our insurance company to explain and it’s all in hand. Although at the time of writing our insurance company has yet to locate the lorry driver.......
Now here is the problem. Our current company won’t shift on the price of its original quote now that we have this claim in with them and now all the quotes I submit want to know about accidents or claims in the last 3 years. This obviously makes the quotes higher (which I understand) but it wasn’t our fault and hopefully the final conclusion will prove not. Normally accidents where you are not to blame and all costs are recovered rarely impacts your insurance costs, but whilst this one is being dealt with all insurance quotes are higher.
I’ve been knackered at having an accident at a most unfortunate time, do I just have to deal with the higher insurance costs even though this accident was not our fault.
I need new insurance before the claim will be finished
If I leave the current provider can you have an outstanding claim whilst being insured with another company?
My car could be in a garage being fixed for a few weeks and it could be insured by a different business, would that be a problem?
Thanks

Yes.
We were in this position a while back and agreed that if the claim went non-fault that the extra premium for the renewal compared to a fault claim would be refunded. Your insurance company may/may not do the same. Worth asking the companies that you're getting renewal quotes from too.
Unfortunately that means talking to them on the phone as the comparison sites have no way of dealing with this scenario.

Is your NCB protected? As sometime you will loose it until the accident is sorted out if not.
Basically you will have to suck it up and pay the extra £££ for the new policy. If its a non fault it may not be that much extra. My wife has 2 x non faults vs my clean record and adding her to mine still lowers my premium.
What you can do is get a quote for the new policy without the new accident and then with it and claim the difference back as an uninsured loss from the lorry drivers insurance co.

Just to add this accident even when you're found not at fault will still drive up your premium slightly for the next 3 years. A non fault accident statistically makes you a higher risk of having another accident. Don't ask me how that works as its totally BS in my mind but that what we have seen and been told.
Many thanks.
Our NCB are "Guranteed" so it claims on the certificates so we should be OK on that front. Dont get me wrong, its not £100s that its been increased by but its just the principal in my view.
Thanks for the comments so far. I have some pre and after accident quotes so perhaps I can claim the difference back once it settles. But as you say Ill have to call them to agree to this as doing this online is impossible.
Cheers
