In the 1960s the Rover P5 was often referred to as the poor man's Rolls Royce, plush and classy with the emphasis on comfort rather than handling. So what's the current PMRR? Apart from a second hand Rolls that is. Mercedes S class? Jaguar XJ?

The Chrysler 300c is the poor man's Bentley, well at least from the number of re-badged ones it seems to be,

Phaeton - if you can find one that hasn't been cabbed.

And is clearly inspired by the Rover P5, bringing us full circle.

I'm surprised so many people are saying VW Phaeton. I don't think they're like a Rolls-Royce at all.

Comfort wise? Perhaps a big Citroen of sorts?

Otherwise old Jag XJ on small (16 inch?) alloys.

Given the Rolls Ghost, surely it has to be the 7-series...?

Poor man's Bentley? VW Phaeton.

Ironically, I have both a VW Phaeton and a Rover P5b on the drive!!!

Both great cars - both engineered ahead of their times (in my humble opinion!).

I was passenger in a Phaeton, a limo service while on business in Germany for a few days. It felt like a bona fide luxury car from the inside. I was quite impressed.

C6 in terms of comfort, but perhaps not in terms of looks.

A new Phaeton (great car, BTW) isn't a poor(ish) man's anything!

A used Phaeton may be a bargain, but then so is an older Rolls Royce, so you might as well buy one of those.

(As an LS400 owner, I'll resist the urge to do the obvious Partridgeism.)

No, you're right - the Phaeton is more like the Bentley it shares a platform with.
