Firstly, I'm a first time poster, so in lieu of an introduction I'll start with an apology in case my question is not in the right category!
I wanted to ask if anyone knows how servicing of non-maintained contract hire cars works. My wife has a contract hire car, it's a BMW 520d (f10) and the condition based service indicator has said it needs a service in a few thousand miles. Do I need to go to a main dealer? will a specialist or local garage do? The contract doesn't seem to mention anything. And how much of a hit will the first service be? Am I best handing it back early? It needs to go back at the end of August anyway and it will probably be May before the service is due.

I've always used local garages for the cars we own and this is the first car we hired.

If the contract isnt specific, order OEM parts and have a local garage do it for you.

But do really properly check the contract

The hiring company will have a list of approved garages. If you ring them up they will tell you the names of ones close to you.

No necessarily main dealers.

Contact the company who you're leasing the vehicle from and see what standard they expect it to be serviced and maintained to by you.

I lease my current car (I hate it and was a bad decision but that's a different story) and they expect it to be serviced on time, but I only have to take it to a 'reputable garage' that can carry out a service to the manufactures recommendations, and stamp the service book.

I ended up just taking it to the stealership for its first service as the cost was same as independents, only difference was they were able to offer me a courtesy car for the day.

This. ^^

Many lease companies use independents when they are paying (my 320d has never been serviced at a BMW dealer) so it's not out of the question. Just check the small print.

Perfect! My questions answered already.

I didn't really want to have to call the leasing company and say 'how do I have your car servicing as cheaply as possible please?' But will do so if it avoids pain further down the line.

Any ideas how much for a first service on the car? I have absolutely no idea what to expect. I pray less than £1k. Although i recall the maintained contract hire was quite a bit more than non maintained and I have spent nothing in the first 14,000 miles. So shouldn't grumble whatever the number.

Now I've knocked this question on the head I can investigate the rest o the site and ask those in the know how to add a turbo to my car!

Out of interest and slightly off topic - why do you hate leasing?

I've noticed a few of the bigger lease companies (e.g. Lex) seem to have contracts with the likes of KwikFit and Halford Autocentres for servicing.

I would probably take the car to BMW though to be on the safe side.

Does this site tell you the cost? https://www.bmw-service.co.uk/

My Merc is through Merc Finance, and they stipulate MB main agent servicing only. There's a list provided of charges if you don't. A non-main agent service is simply classed as "unserviced".

With my last car (I'm on my second now) I actually handed the car back early as the second service was 500 quid and I only had a couple of weeks to go.

From a pure maths perspective, sell it, and buy one with a Turbo fitted biggrin

Not sure selling it would be permitted in my household. But I'm thinking pimping it may potentially go unnoticed. It's an old 630i. Then again, if I'm handing back the leased car I will have an opportunity to shop!

Sorry that is the result of my poor wording. I don't hate leasing, its the car that I lease that I hate, compounded by the length of the term I'm stuck with.

I have called the leasing company. I can have it serviced anywhere that:
Is VAT registered, can stamp the book, and will fit manufacturer approved parts (if any are required).

They answered the question straight away and their answer was nowhere near as onerous as I thought it would be. Thanks all.

That was the answer I wanted to give you earlier, but it took me three paragraphs to do so laugh

No worries, cheers for the response.
