Are these normal insurance prices for a 20 year old?
Discussion
So my mother bought me a £2000 car for my 20th birthday a few months ago and last week I passed my driving test, the car has been sitting on my drive way. I've been checking through insurance and nearly every comparison website (confused, compare the market etc) quote me above £2000 for a year even with an excess of £500.
The car itself is a 2004 Honda Jazz 1.4 84bhp. It's only a small car, smaller than an MK1 Focus but it seems the reason it's high is the 1.4 engine? My parents want me to pay the insurance, it seems like I'm pretty much f
ked as I can't afford to pay £2000 upfront right now and monthly is out of the question because of the fees.
Does anyone have any advice or cheap insurance companies? I tried co-op blackbox and they want £3000 even with the box installed

The problem is not your car, it's the Veyron/bus queue you might hit.
Try a black box, try putting your parents on as named drivers, try calling a broker who can do a search for you. Try doing PassPlus.
At the end of the day you're going to get bullyrammed for a few years like we all did.
Sad but true.

I put my dad as a second driver who has 20 years no claims and it pushed the price up £200. Do you have a number for brokers I can ring? Try a black box, try putting your parents on as named drivers, try calling a broker who can do a search for you. Try doing PassPlus.

Owch. #1 son is doing his leasons at the mo, I got him a 1litre suzuki swift, he is 19 and first year was £800 insured FC in his name, limited to 5k miles.
O/T but will he get his 1 years NCB as he is still on provisional licence?
I'm thinking perhaps it's the car my mum bought, a 1 litre car would possibly be cheaper on insurance than a 1.4 for a first driver.O/T but will he get his 1 years NCB as he is still on provisional licence?
Quite a few young drivers speak highly of Admiral for reasonably priced insurance
.
I don't think £2000-ish for a 20 year old male who has just passed his test is bad at all... It would be a lot more on the sort of first car (Corsa, Fiesta etc) younger lads normally aquire
.
But shopping around is key - google "motor insurance" or wade through the yellow pages and call round all the brokers and insurers you can find for a day or two (seriously

).As said, it's not the car, engine, value or anything else. It's the fact that you're young and inexperienced.
My insurance didn't get "cheap" until I hit 25. £2000 for the year with £500 excess sounds about normal for your age. Sounds a lot but broken down into monthly payments and it becomes a bit more manageable.
That's the cost of driving I'm afraid. I hope no one promised you it would be cheap...

It was my postcode that pushed my price up when I first started driving in a 1.3 fiesta when I was 17. It was £3000 per year tpft. I took it on the chin, and paid up, it's crap, but it's the price of freedom (Fuel, tax, MOT's, repairs etc. on top!)
Sometimes you're better off with a bigger sized car, my friend got cheaper insurance on a 1.8 petrol Laguna than on his 1.2 polo.
Also, my Dad increased my insurance, but my girlfriend on the policy reduced it.

Prices are going to be high regardless at your age.
I doubt the 1.4 Jazz is making much difference over say a 1 litre fiesta. Although ultimately it might have made sense to get quotes before your parents purchased the car. I'm not saying it's your fault, it was a gift and you weren't to know (plus it's a nice gift) but maybe enquiries should have been made before they bought it.
Best thing to do is go with elephant/admiral and on a 10 month accelerator policy where you get a 10 month premium but get 1 years no claims.
The prices you're getting are pretty standard and nothing out of the ordinary. Others might have slightly cheaper premiums, but there are far too many variables to draw any conclusions.
Firstly Bob on the internet might have a better post code, different occupation, have done pass plus, park on a drive, do less annual mileage etc
Someone on the internet simply saying "I paid x amount on my fiesta/corsa etc" is no use at all.

I think that quote sounds about right.
When I bought my first car, a base model Fiesta popular 1 litre back in 1988, when I was 20, my first premium was around £750.
However, my step son has been searching quotes for a Mazda MX5 for when he passes his test (he is 19), and he can get insurance for around £1400! I wonder if it's because it has two seats, rather than four?

Best bet will be to sell the car and get something cheaper to insure. My son is just starting lessons and I spent hours punching different cars into comparison sites. In the end the cheapest cars I could find to insure a new driver on were a classic Mini or a Skoda Fabia 1.2
The Skoda is basically a VW polo. The best deal I found on the Skoda was £900 for the year, pretty much anything else came out at £2k plus.
