Hi all,

Ive already rang my own insurance and she was a bit abrupt so i dont trust her answers, ive just had a stone crack my windscreen from a lorries tyre and its big enough to require a full replacement. I am wondering if i claim through insurance is this likely to affect:

My NCD

My premium for future insurers

And would i have to put it down as 'making a claim in the last 5 years' next time i get insurance quotes online????????

No
No unless they ask if you've made a claim including for glass (not many do)
No see above

there seems to be a lot of contridictory information on the interweb, a lot of people say you have to put it as a claim if your doing online quotes on gocompare for example

is it safe to drive with a chipped windscreen? theres a tiny hole i think so tiny raindrops might very slightly seep through, but it wont shatter or anything will it?

Yes you do have to declare it if you go through the comparison sites, some insurers take it into account but a lot of insurers just don't care. It doesn't affect your NCD.

Why not just price up a new screen outside of your insurance and if it's too expensive just get it done through your insurance, it's absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of future insurance prices.

I just had my windscreen raplced through my insurance. Paid the £75 excess that's it. Doesnt affect any no claim or anything and doesnt count as a "claim" really.

You are safe to drive with a chipped or cracked windscreen as they are laminated, so if the windscreen was to shatter it would still be held together by the plastic.

I had a windscreen claim with Admiral - didn't impact my no claims.

Direct line did want to know about it though - not that it did anything to the premium.

Sometimes they will just PAUSE your NCB, so if you are on 5 years NCB, and you are about to turn to 6 years NCB, they will keep you on 5 years NCB.

Swiftcover is popular for this:

yikes What about our NCD??? yikes

The insurance industry really has done a great job of scaring people out of using the product they pay for and claiming for damage haven't they. Don't forget, NCD is a discount percentage of a variable, you could have 99% discount on a premium of £10,000 or 10% off £111.11 (I know, this is technically a tiny amount less but you get m,y point).

Glass claims can freeze your NCD with some insurers. This change was brought about very quietly, if your insurer did decide to reduce your NCD for a glass claim you would probably find it as hard to find out about. Check with your insurer 1st, also check if it will affect your base premium too.

this is the page on my insurance about windscreens

https://www.endsleigh.co.uk/claim-centre/motor-win...

Is it still advisable to ring to see if they FREEZE your NCD, or does that page prove it does bott all to your no claims and therefore i can just 'crack on and sort it through insurers' so to speak

done some online quotes doesent seem to affect the cheapest ones touch wood

Some independent firms can be a nightmare. Some fitters working for the larger firms can be too.

I just had to replace one £75 excess and not gaining another years ncb. Or £158 fitted.

I chose to keep my "no claims".

in my policy it says it does not affect NCD, but then a few lines down it says your ncd wont be reduced provided you make no more than 2 claims in 5 years, does this mean if i was to make another claim for something else it would affect my NCD?
