Hi,

Sometime this year I will buy my first car in UK. I've run some quotes on Confused and GoCompare and since I have 0 NCB (and I don't know if they accept NCB proof from abroad) the cheapest insurances were around 900 - 1000£ a year for a Focus or Civic. But there were a few (Bell for example) that are around 700 if you let them fit a data gathering device to your car for the first 3 months - they call it black box.
Do you guys think this is worth it just to save 200£? Have you had any experience with this type of devices?

Thanks

Munter

No experience but if it saved me £300 I'd do it.

Based purely on posts on PH, people who have them fitted seem in the most part to be happy with the reduced premiums.
Some people who don't have them fitted hate the idea of them and tghink that it's a slipperly slope to everyone hving to have one fitted.

However £200 isn't a lot and you may find that after a year or so your premium drops right down anyway. I'm guessing, based on the premiums quoted, you're not a 19 year old Yoof, who these devices are really aimed at.

If you regularly break the speed limit and corner at high speed then forget about it.

I am 27. I had two cars with insurance on my name for the past 5 years but abroad. I moved to UK last year. Never had an accident that was my fault. Maybe I will find a company that accepts NCB from abroad.
I read some articles and it seems that if you are not 100% careful they might do more bad than good (people getting tickets for speeding, insurance increased because not respecting all their rules etc) Was wondering if these are true or just theoretical situations.

For me the difference was £450ish and in all honesty my box has been fine, tesco/insurethebox would be worth a look as they don't do anything like fining you for driving too fast/late and I have managed to score pretty much perfectly just from driving normally but keeping an extra eye on the speedo on roads where the limit seems too low. However beyond the savings seem to disappear as I've just sorted out a box free policy for £100 less than my renewal quote. While tesco/insurethebox deactivate the box automatically at the end of the policy some companies charge to remove them so do be wary of this.

I have a black box on my car, insured with a company called ingnie. No curfews or "buying miles" bs, it just records my acceleration, braking, cornering and speed. I drive exactly how I would without a box (not like a granny) and it has given me no problems, in the 9+ months I have had it, I have saved around £20 per month on my insurance.

I drive a W reg polo 1.4 and without a box insurance was £3000 (I'm 18) and with it my insurance came down to £1500, would definitely recommend it. thumbup
