Car Choices (Honestly, I'll stop asking soon...)
Discussion
- Budget is £25-27k after negotiations/discounts
- I drive 22k+/year and plan to keep the car for 5 years. Majority motorway driving.
- Preference is for new so I can get the colour/trim I like plus warranty etc
- Must be diesel, must be auto and would very much like heated leather, folding mirrors, parking sensors etc.
- 50mpg ideal
- 4 seats are vital, back doors a preference.
- Not a fan of "poverty spec". I like it to look decent. Not a fan of black interiors.
Options currently considered, all new:
- Mini Cooper D, 5 door. (Tiresome on long journeys?)
- VW Golf (It's really quite dull, isn't it?)
- Seat Leon (As above)
- Merc C220 Sport (very top end of budget, relies on getting maximum discount out of retailer, but it's a lovely car IMO)
- BMW 318D Luxury (Again, very top end of budget, would 318D be too lethargic?)
- BMW 1-series (Waiting for the new ones now)
- Audi Q3 (The A4 is dull as mud, but Q3 is also top end of budget)
- Volvo V40 (I don't like black leather interiors. Bawwwwring.)
What else should I look at? Have only driven the C class so far, will be driving the others other the next month or so I expect.
Date to change is early July. Finance will be £2k deposit plus a £25k bank loan. Happy to take PCP for the deposit contributions and then pay it off the next week.

Frind of mine has the C220 in a diesel with the AMG trimmings. Great car, looks nice. Has it in black, tints and black wheels (looks better than it sounds). Had it remapped and it goes really well now, not that it struggled before.
We spent a lot of time looking about, he had the BMW equivilent before, and much happier in the merc. Comfier, nicer place to be. Stretch your budget and get one.

You are taking a £25k bank loan to buy a car that you are going to do 100k in and will therefore be worth f
k all in 5 years time...
Personally spend £15 - £18k on something 2 years old with low miles it makes far more financial sense could get a lovely nearly new 3 or 5 series or a c/e class or whatever for that and could have £10k in the bank for a toy or a summer holiday.
Edit - This F10 5 Series would fit the bill 3 years old only 20k miles £10k under budget and far nicer than a Golf or V40 etc...

For those sorts of figures, I'd be looking at a 520d SE - might just squeeze a brand new one (see http://www.petervardybmw.co.uk/current-offers/new-...
Sorry if I am not helping - what do you expect from the internet?

Possibly one of the more helpful comments ;-) And I'll take a gander, just feel the 5-series would be bigger than needed/low spec in SE form?Sorry if I am not helping - what do you expect from the internet?

Suggestion above of the Skoda is a good shout so thanks for that, amusingduck

Agree that the used ones present better value. I'm not entirely opposed to the idea I'm just used to the convenience of new where in I can pick and choose exact options I'd like.

Really? If you were turning 60 and looking for a car for your retirement, if you are buying new get on some of the brokers sites and see what you could get for that money.

5 series is in a different league to everything you have listed above and will come with more toys, dab, media, nav, leather, heated seats etc. as standard too. Suggestion above of the Skoda is a good shout so thanks for that, amusingduck

Plus the deals on them currently are massive, as are 3 series deals, people getting up to 28% off new.
A 2 litre diesel auto makes the most sense in a 5 series, E Class, X3, Q5 etc. etc. than it does in something small imho, in something small you want it to be at least fast to make up for the lack of refinement and comfort. You will also be impressed with its turn of pace and the MPG, in our touring I used to average 45mpg and could see close to 55 on a run.
I do 25k miles a year and want comfort and toys, I had roughly your budget and after trying just about everything out there I went with a 20d xDrive X3, Jan 13 with 29k miles on it but came with everything, prof nav, internet, bluetooth advanced, reverse camera, heated sport seats, heated rear seats, panoramic roof, media interface, adaptive xenons, dab radio and a few other bits. It was about the same price as a 520d touring, but the residuals on the X3 are much better at years 5 and 6 so worked out quite a bit cheaper.
I am getting 40mpg round town and 50 on a run, about 5mpg behind the 520d touring.
To me a 5mpg hit was worth it for the extra comfort and more relaxed nature of the X3 over a 3 series or 5 series.
Not saying buy an X3, just explaining why I didn't stick with a 5 touring.

However they are that many 3/5 series for sale with a bit of shopping around I am sure you could find one with the specification you want used and at a good saving as well.

I'm not sure you can, they seem to be as expensive as a discounted new car even up to two years old. However they are that many 3/5 series for sale with a bit of shopping around I am sure you could find one with the specification you want used and at a good saving as well.
The new discounts on 5 series are huge at the moment.

Not sure here is a 2013 520d SE with only 17k miles and the professional nav, bluetooth etc.. for £20.5k privateThe new discounts on 5 series are huge at the moment.
Bit of bargain and probably secure that car for £19,750 even with discount a new model would be nearly £10k more?

Yeah, keep thinking everyone wants a touring. Used saloons seem a no brainer. Bit of bargain and probably secure that car for £19,750 even with discount a new model would be nearly £10k more?

Plus driveline BMW warranty on that is only around £33 a month when it needs adding next year, and if you pay monthly it doesn't increase, even if you get to 100k miles.
