I was driving home today and came to a sharp bend to see a sports bike clearly having recently crashed lying on it's side on the grass verge.

I stopped to have a look in case the biker was hurt nearby, having been thrown off, as the skid pattern in the grass matched where the bike lay.

I couldn't see him so I knocked at a nearby house to be told that the lad had been taken to hospital and the Police had left it that way.

I asked if I could move the bike onto their drive because I thought it would:

stop another accident from drivers looking at the crash scene
stop someone else looking for the biker
stop his bike being stolen

The couple seemed amazed I was concerned about any of it and refused to let me put it on their drive (20m away)

I picked it up, it wasn't too badly damaged so I pushed it 30m onto a side road and left it on it's side stand on the pavement (clearly visible but not clearly crashed)

I wasn't the only helpful person as a lad saw me struggling to manoeuvre the bike on the grass and stopped to help.

I'm surprised the Police left it where it was - I couldn't have driven on knowing that someone may be lying hurt.

Good work smile might be worth ringing 101 to let cop know where it is?

When I got knocked off my bike I was still in the middle of the road as was my bike. Police happened to be driving past they slowed down wound the window down and asked if I was ok. Obviously I said yes as you do. They then drove off, me kneeling over a bike pissing oil onto the road and too heavy to lift.

So im not particularly surprised.

Good for you! The owners of the house really do deserve sausages in the lawn.

Sad really.

A good few years ago my dad was taken ill while out and about. It got a bit daft - he rang my grandfather in Cornwall, who rang the police in Goole which was where he was - but not sure where.

They went and found him, packed him into an ambulance and checked his car chucking anything expensive looking into the amublance for my mother to collect later. Car had to stay put for a day or so.

I just don't think there is a system to sort it out other than relying on others goodwill.

Thanks guys - it wasn't thanks I was looking for - I was more wondering if people would have expected the Police to at least stand it up so it didn't distract drivers / get them to stop and look for a body.

It happened in the countryside, there is nothing there except the bend, the house and the road entrance so anyone looking to recover it, couldn't miss where I left it.

In my haste I didn't even notice what bike it was - I didn't want to be seen as eyeing it up, as I was in my van at the time.

I've needed help in the past and I was very grateful when I received it - just paying back.

That sounds very irresponsible of the police to just leave it there, unless they thought recovery was on its way. I, and I'm sure many others, would have stopped and searched for a wounded biker in the hedge (a friend of a friend spent days lying by a motorway a few years ago...) and called 999, so you just saved a whole lot of people a lot of wasted effort! I'm shocked at the couple you spoke to as well - I'd have had the bike on the drive no problem. People are strange.

There is, Google "police statutory removal"

The problem is the BIB or sometimes Hato's etc try and help out to save someone stat recovery fees and as soon as it goes wrong there is always a queue of people only to happy to chew your ass,

I have seen letters where the BIB doing exactly that trying so save someone a fee who then got hit by PCN notice for where the vehicle was left, The result was an MPs letter to the Minister.

Should have just followed stat recovery procedure and let the vehicle or bike owner sort the cost.

Maybe they did and went to hospital with the rider or went to another priority job whilst recovery on route.

It's a no win situation.

Thought they normally stick "Police Aware" noticed on abandoned vehicles to show they are aware of it
