Never had a private plate before. Don't understand the mechanics of getting one on the car really, and how much of arse it might or might not be.

Just purchased a used car, picking it up at the end of next week. Is it doable before then, or if not, how long will it take me to get the old plate off and new one on?

Are there any DVLA offices left? They used to be great and super efficient at this sort of thingin my experience. Last got a plate sorted (swapped from car to car) 2 years ago at my soon to close local office. As I recall it was all done there and then.

I bought a plate straight from the DVLA once. It took a couple of days to get the paperwork though and I think that was more or less it. That was in about 1997, so it may have changed.

It's probably postal and riddled with delays and mistakes these days. I hope not, but I fear so.

Unfortunately all the local offices have closed down. Everything has to go through Swansea now. It was the same for me, done in an hour at the local office

Sorry that wasn't the end! Just wait for the paperwork to arrive and send it off to the DVLA, they will send you a replacemet MOT certificate and all the paperwork including the certificate you need to take to the place where you want to have the plates made up. Also don't forget to tell your insurance and they will send you a replacement certificate with the new reg on. Unfortunately I can't see it being done by the end of next week

Bought a plate via one of the reg dealers just before Christmas, that would have taken slightly longer because they were affectively just brokering a deal but it took about 2 weeks from start to finish.
If you haven't got the car yet have you got the V5 and if it needs one the MOT, as you'll need to send these off, when the new docs come you can then buy legal plates, or while you're waiting for the docs to come you can buy plates from the online 'dodgy' retailers.
Buying direct from DVLA I'd guess at about a week.
