Heavy bassy noise when accelerating E320 CDi
Discussion
I've got a bit of an issue with my Dad's W211. It is making a very heavy noise that is similar to bass, it's so heavy in fact that my ears were in agony after a 1 hour journey.
Let me explain a typical scenario of when the noise happens. Driving along a flat road with the cruise control set to 70mph its fine. But as you get to an incline it makes the noise. If I manually drop it down a gear the noise disappears.
Accelerating up to motorway speeds the noise suddenly comes in after passing a particular speed. It's similar to the noise an aeroplane sometimes makes when the whole cabin fizzes and buzzes.
I also noticed when accelerating away from 50mph roadworks, as the noise came in there's a bit of momentary vibration from the rear axel.
I can't figure out what it might be. The noise sounds like it's coming through the windows but the fact it goes away by driving at higher revs is making me think it could be gearbox related.
So now I turn to the resource that is PH, anybody have any ideas?
