Same thing happened to me a few years ago, when I was driving out of Nantwich. Never heard anything, so I assume the thing was just faulty.

If you're driving towards that type of camera, it won't issue a ticket. Sometimes they are mistakenly activated but the flash-type only work if they're following the rear of a vehicle.

normally there are graduated white lines on the same side of the road to the camera, these are for the police to have secondary evidence of the speed a vehicle is moving, if you were on the other side there are no lines, you'll be ok.

Not necessarily! If the road is straight and the photo is wide enough to capture both lanes, the lines can be extended digitally from the first side of the road to calculate the speed. It all depends on the road!

HHMM? Not too sure about that one?

It wouldn't be a legal use of a GATSO because they're not supposed to flash oncoming vehicles, regardless of what it read. Truvelo cameras (2 round eyes facing oncoming traffic) flash in infrared because GATSO-type visible flashes would dazzle drivers.

He's wrong, the Gatso isn't type approved to capture oncoming traffic.

That's happened to me loads of times going into Cardiff on the A470, particularly if it's rainy and there is lots of spray. A couple of times (in my yoof) I was doing well in excess of the speed limit when they went off and they never "extrapolated the lines" and all that, even though I am sure it is technically possible to do so.

Was one near me that always went off if you approached it quite fast - as a (much) younger man I deliberately set it off when driving late at night, and never heard anything. As I recall it only ever flashed me once too.

I have set one of them off on my route home from work. All it takes on the bike is high beam and a quick twist of the throttle-not that I'd ever do it on purpose! Wonder what the photo looks like as it occurs only when the road is completely clear for some reason.

In scotland they are often painted on both side of the road at GATSO's. I always assumed this is so that it can still get you if you're overtaking someone and therefore on the wrong side of the road.

I've set off a fair few going the other way, never had anything. I guess if you were to make a habit of it you might get a visit from your local constabulary!

You'll be fine. I've been flashed oncoming about 6 times now (also on the same side of the road as the camera when going towards it over taking a bus), no tickets smile

you'll defo be fine..theres one on my street which I pass n flash most early hours of the morning lol.

by the time the camera has detected your speed and decided to flash d you, you have already passed the camera enttirely.,its takinga a picture of my exhaust fumes and the road lol. if however your facing the same way as the camera then its a different story as you cant get away from it.

It only captures one way. The lines are on the otherside to stop the person speeding going on the other side of the road to avoid the camera.

This happened to me last year (A41 just off the M53), camera was facing me and no lines on the road. Laser light shone out of the camera right into my eyes and double flashed me.

I raised this issue of it being on the wrong side of the road with no markings and was promptly handed my £60 fine and 3 points.

You can see the camera pointing into the wrong lane with no markings. They have since replaced it with a camera on the left hand side facing the opposite way with new markings.

A few years ago I got snapped twice in a week, once in Greater Manchester, once in Sheffield both were double flashes and both were forward facing cameras. The one in Greater Manchester was on the opposite side of the road. Both were £60 and 3 points. HTH

Not a Gatso - those are type approved for forward facing photos. Speed is calculated by the the time you take to cross the white lines before the camera.

Flash is infrared, no where near as bright a gatsos.
