Don't know if this makes any sense, but am trying to purchase a new shed.

Seller has sent the V5 off to take his plate off, but has the old part including the new keeper supplement. New V5 hasn't turned up. I've spoken to DVLA and they are saying 5-6 weeks for a new one to be issued.

So I can't tax the car as the old supplement is no longer valid, but I'm told that I have to tax it at time of purchase. But I can't!

DVLA told me to wait until the new V5 has arrived.

Given the financial exposure, and I know the car / owner, I know there is no risk here.

Anyone worked a way around this?

No help but it seems the new process of tax not transfering means definately don't buy cars until seller has plate transfer completed...

Thanks - this is complete lunacy. I want to tax the car (and pay!) but I can't as the DVLA take ages to process a transfer.

You are not meant to dispose of a vehicle until the transfer is done, so I can see DVLA not being helpful. We had a V5 back in just a week recently, so it might not take long.

Thanks - I called DVLA helpline and went online, and the new keepers bit is for the old V5 so won't work. Suspect I will get the same response at the Post Office.

I fail to see why this can't all be done same day. If the tax is all done electronically / on line, what can't the transfer of ownership be?

Basically I have to collect the car Tue / Wed, or he takes to the local dealer on Thursday as he is leaving for Dubai Thursday night. Looks like a missed opportunity

You can use the number / reference from the New Keepers Supplement to insure (go online and click through the links and there is an option to do that) or the post office.

I was worried when I collected my new (used) motorbike about tax, and my wife sorted it all out there and then in the dealers office using the internet on her phone.

FWIW my V5C for my bike came through within 3 weeks of sending off the old one.

[edit] sorry, disregard this post since there wasnt an updated V5. That's kind of odd, because the DVLA sent me a new V5 document for my other motorbike to superseed the old one...

The new keepers supplement we used to tax my fiancée's car at the post office was from an old v5, wasn't an issue, then filled out a v62 to get a v5 issued in her name.

Have a search on threads in SP&L

we had a recent issue where a seller lost his "vanity" plate as a result of someone applying for a new log book when the plate transfer was going thro

The buyer ended up getting car and the "vanity" plate as a result - and as far as I remember the buyer didn't hand it back

"vanity" plates are a pita at the best of times

Can you not agree that the seller delivers the car and you sit on it till the transfer takes place?

If you try to tax on the V5 new keepers suplement you may find that the VED is then cancelled and a refund sent to the old owner when the plate change goes thro

loads of issues here but I'm sure you and the seller can work out something that suits both - technically the VED is still valid on the car untill DVLA process the change (unless it's already SORN)

Seller shouldn't have sold the car until the plate/v5 was back, you shouldn't of bought it until it was finished.
2 people not understanding the system which is pretty simple regarding this. If you haven't got the green slip not much you can do as legal your not the owner, even if you have it wont be valied by the time the v5 goes back to the seller.

Always wait for the v5 to come back before buying the car that's always been the case.

Getting the V5 back should be fairly quick but if it genuinely has gone missing then you have to wait for weeks just to make sure it doesn't turn up then they will issue a new one.

But as others have said another good example of why you should do the transfer before selling. I wouldn't even look at a car that the seller wants to take the plate off but hasn't yet unless it was a very special car.

Being the registered keeper and being the legal owner are two different things.

Well there is a different between legal title, beneficial ownership and the concept of registered keeper. The later does not confer any form of ownership.

The issue relates to the fact that the V5C hasn't returned after several weeks wait.

The bizarre thing is that I actually want to pay the tax, but can't do it online, but can (as I understand) go to the post office as per the olden days with cover note and MOT in hand with the new keepers supplement...?

Is it the new keepers supplement with the old reg on it?

I think so.

Come to think of it, I taxed a car like this years ago when I purchased a car that was a trade sale and had a cherished plate taken off it - v5c hadn't come back and the tax only had 2 weeks to run.

Then 3 things I think could possibly happen

1. if the reg transfer to retention or another car is in progress it'll cause a few glitches with that (owner may not get his plate off)

or

2. Post office systemj will have problem with taxing a car that doesn't exist

or

3. You'll tax it and then possibly when the reg transfer goes thro the tax will be cancelled and the previous keeper gets a refund

Or none of the above which is kinda 4 options

I sent off a v form to get the registration document for my car as it has not turned up. New form arrived 4 days later...

I was surprised.
