My 320ci failed on front brakes being inbalanced, had the discs and pads off and they seem to be in good condition. Faulty caliper I presume, theres a 318i being broken by a friend, will it be the same caliper or different as bigger engine?

Quite unusual to get faulty calipers on BM's in my experience. They make the slides (which are the normal culprits) out of stainless steel, and this makes them pretty robust. I'd defo confirm the caliper is bad before putting a used one on there.
Just my point of view.

Although in my old E46 318i other than noisy tappits the only problem I had was brake caliper, but as said get a 2nd opinion. My caliper just needed a stip dowb and cleaning.

I thought calipers were a fairly common e46 problem - only car I've needed to change a caliper on, mine was due to damaged piston seal and hence corroded piston.

Sticking front calipers are a common issue, have had to replace them on 3 E46's I've owned.

Unless one of the discs is warped, which would show up as quite a severe vibration, I suppose caliper is the most likely culprit.

It is indeed the same part on 318i as 320ci, confirmed by a quick Google. All petrols except the 330i use the same brakes.

Same here. Not sure where this thing about them being a rare fail has came from. They really aren't.
