Evening all,

I am looking for some guidance on private plates (I apologise if a) this is in the wrong place or b) this has been covered before--I have searched to no avail).

For five years I have had a fairly innocuous, but to me embarrassing, private plate. it was a well intentioned gift, but I want it gone. And the more I drive (I commute more now), the more I feel it makes me look like a poser/attracts ill feeling (might be my paranoia, that one...). So, my question is, how can I surrender the plate? I have no desire to put it on retention or transfer it, but my extensive research suggests this is the only way (or I could sell it, but I'm not after a profit, nor do I want the hassle).

Thanks in advance for any help. And please, haters (or indeed lovers), don't judge me for having one and wanting to get rid of it.

What is the registration? It can't be that bad as the dvla wouldn't of allowed it.

It's J** W**. Simply letters and numbers based around me and personal details. It isn't in itself, an embarrassing or rude plate. I just don't like it because it is too extrovert.

Ebay for 7 days

Or flog to New Reg (or equiv) if vaguely decent

Or advertise it on this thread and have it deleted ;-)

Put it on Ebay or the like as a freebie for someone if they pay the transfer fees?

Thanks. Did consider the New Reg option, but I really just want to get rid without hassle. No plans to attempt to sell on here, fear not.

I expect you need to put it on retention, then cash it in and get your £80 back.

No...sadly. That would just make me snigger every time I walked up to the car. I'd keep that for that reason alone.smile

If you intend selling the car in the near future then just leave the plate on there.

I've heard people talk about surrendering it to the DVLA in the past, not sure if it's _actually_ possible though.

If your only option actually is to transfer it and you want to find a recipient to pay the fee, give me a shout

On the extrovert scale I think you'll find you've set a very low bar and are comfortably underneath it!

You can surrender it for free (like no charge at all) and get back an age related plate (or the original for the car)

Plates which are surrendered are not sold on again - most only have one potential buyer

No need for retention costs or trying to sell it

Sorry to hijack the thread but i am selling a car with private plate but I have not mentioned the plate in the odd nor can you see it. What would be involved in keeping it and getting an age related plate for the car to be sold?

Cheers.

Trying to retain a vanity plate whilst also selling the car is daft and risky

Apply to retain the plate - get issued original reg or a n other age related plate before you sell the car

£105 for retention for a year I think (includes the £80 assignment fee to put it on another vehicle)

Thanks. Not sure I have the time now as I have a possible buyer of the car already and don't want to delay the sale (if it happens). Thanks tho.

It's a slightly unusual plate but nothing personal.

Thank you for this; that was exactly what I was looking for but could not find. I will save the thread and look into it.

That's OK I bookmarked it for some reason so it was easy to find biggrin

The other thread had the same info in the end but was full of PH'rs saying DVLA don't do anything for free and that the few PH'rs who said were talking rubbish......
