Having read many rants from fellow members of pistonheads, I thought I was clued up on buying vehicle tax, its all pretty simple, tax stays with person and car, therefore I will have to sort out tax. No problem, there is an online system, but no I've still been foiled.

I've paid a deposit on my new car, the dealers given me the new keeper supplement reference number, I've organised my insurance to swap over, so head online to tax my car at which point I start having the problems. I enter all the details and discover the previous owner was claiming higher rate disability benefit, and the tax class is Disabled. Fair enough, a quick call to the helpful people at the DVLA should allow me to get the tax class switched, and Ill pay the tax, but NO. All they can do is direct me to the post office where I will have more paperwork to fill in to change the tax class, and then pay for my new tax over the counter. Now I will have to go and buy the car, apologise to the dealer for leaving it on his forecourt, walk 1/2 a mile to the post office, join the massive queue of people to tax my car, wasting an extra hour of my morning.

The bit that annoys me is the DVLA have assumed as a new owner of a car I will be disabled as well, surely a very rare occurence. A simple tick box on the V5 to confirm if the disabled tax class is required would easily fix this, and an option to tax it either way.

Grrrrr

That is really annoying

Have you contacted the dealer to explain this to them? They might be quite lenient and not mind too much about letting you leave the car a little while longer, they probably wernt even aware themselves of this sort of situation

it is quite the bks.

Sounds like DVLA don't care so just continue to tax it as disabled which will save you all the hassle.

I bought a car for my sister the other evening and when I went to tax is asked me for the reference number on the new keeper slip, I entered this and it told me that the reference number needed to be 12 digits, this one was 11. So I checked another car and it was 11 too!

Long story short, I had to tax the car using the V5 reference number, so now when the DVLA will switch the old owner to my sister they will cancel her tax and refund it to her only so she has to do it again!!

Im not so worried about the dealer, I am sure he will understand and I will only be an hour, but it is frustrating when I thought I had it all covered.

No way of just getting the Disabled tax as you need to prove your entitlement to disability allowance on the next page.

Which makes even more of a mockery of changing the tax class for the vehicle, its the person that's disabled, not the vehicle.

I just taxed my car for 12 months, it was extremely easy and very fast.

I'd have expected the dealer to sort that out.

Maybe they can't?

Having to change the tax class on a previously-"disabled"-class vehicle isn't something that's changed. It's always been like that.

And <reaches for V5C> the doc ref on the V5C/2 is definitely one character longer than that on the actual V5C - there's an extra leading character.

Same as it's always been though. You could only ever change the tax class at a DVLA office or Post office.

Agree it's something they need to streamline though, as you tend not to know the car is registered as a disablity vehicle until you try to tax it.

Well, it'll tell you if you look it up online, but there isn't the simplicity of it saying on the tax disc any more.

I did one of these the other day, went to local post office, explained that I needed to change from disabled to normal taxation, done in under two minutes and filled no forms in. If the OP has nothing more to whine about in his life then he must have things very easy. FFS grow up.

Stop making such a fuss. It takes a couple of minutes at a post office, no forms to fill in. I was in and out in no time.
