Scrappers with a heart!
Discussion
As some readers will know I have sometimes referred in the past affectionately to my POS, otherwise known as my 98 SLK 230. She was basically stollen off a friend and colleague in Switzerland for a grand and was run as my daily out there and then back here for 2yrs. Supercharger was bust, the passenger door window wasn't perfect and the windscreen spent 18months progressively more and more cracked till it ran the whole length. Yet she got my through two Swiss winters of -20 and snow at varying depths. Back across the continent containing my entire length life built up from living there - anybody who says the boot of a MK1 SLK isn't enormous is frankly such an incompetent packer that their advise is essentially worthless.
I finally put a new screen on here when she came back, taxed and MOT'd her and left her for the wife to run while I buggered off back to Europe . In the last 6 months she has sat on the driveway and done nothing/rusted, so the wife decided it was time it had to go. My critical resource is time - I don't have any, so with a largely unused car with some issues that required time to sort my wife took her own pragmatic route and said it was the scrappers. Arranged £150 with the local chap and round he came.
To my astonishment the car was still there last night when I arrived home. Wife said the scrapper got it started once eh jury rigged the buggered bonnet opener, jumped the battery and had a quick little spin in her. Said it was far too good to scrap and that it would do for his mother with a little tlc and did she mind if he came back with his mother on Sunday to show her! Paid the wife the agreed cash up front to honour the deal.
Frankly I'm really rather happy. The old girl WAS too good to be scrapped, she just required someone with time to mess with her a little. The supercharger I believe is related to a known k40 board that the more model based forums know about and can be sorted. It was a cracking car, massively reliable and coped with the worst Switzerland could throw at it, automatic, wrong hand, rear wheel drive and all.
Just a little bit of a nice story of scrappers being one us and a car being kept to provide joy
