Can anyone tell me the legal situation of breaking a car in my garage? I've got a few cars at various places and decided I need to reduce the quantity.
Some I will repair and sell but others are beyond economic repair with engine issues etc. So I figure I live in the middle of nowhere with only a couple of neighbours so why not strip them and sell the parts on eBay/ pistonheads etc
I'm sensible enough to dispose of the oils etc properly, the same goes for the air on gases.
I have enough room indoors to strip the car inside so the only eyesore will be the half hour to get it the shell on a trailer to take to the metal recyclers.
Any help would be appreciated

If it's just one car and it's not as part of a business then I don't think there are any.

Well it's not part of a business but it would be more than one car, Maybe one every couple of months until I manage to reduce the cars I have

How are you going to collect the Air Con gasses? Genuine Question.

Take the car to a garage first. Get them to take the gasses out, unless there's another way to safely dispose of it? I've done it in the past and they won't charge much.
I'd rather do it safely for the sake of 20 quid

No issues with doing it at home... As long as your garden doesn't end up looking like this, you'll be fine.

Lol no doesn't look like that, I'm very keen to only have one car at a time to fix or break, I've already got a daimler a jag and a bmw that I use parked on the drive so don't want anymore of a car park even though I have a big enough drive

Those things that leak out all the time from millions of cars? I hope he accidentally doesn't puncture one of the hoses, think of the environmental damage!

Sounds like a business that you don't want to admit to.

How many cars will be broken?
How long have you owned them? Years?

If it's 2/3 and you've owned them for years then perhaps that will be allowed.

But, the cynic in me thinks that may not be the case!! smile

Cars that are privately owned, are beyond repair, and need to be broken for spares to realise the best value from them. Private buyers are allowed to sell at a profit you know...

The OP is talking about a car every couple of months, so 6 a year... hardly a massive car recycling plant.

I've owned the cars for ages, years some of them. Having said that they aren't all registered to me as some came without paperwork, although I have hpi checked them all in case of any being stolen.
I like to tinker and fix cars but some are either beyond my expertise or beyond economic repair, if it were a business it wouldn't be a very good one, as I said I'm I it talking about maybe a car every compel of months

Agree entirely.

However, very few people have 6 or more old bangers lying around.

It's a grey area but I think this would be seen as a business.

Yes I did a T5 a few months ago due to the gearbox failing, that's why I thought about breaking the other u repairable cars I own, I don't want to just scrap them as you only get £150 maybe for scrap

I wish I only had 6 lol but there not all beyond repair, maybe I should start it as a business if it's a grey area, it's only a hobby buy want to make sure I'm not going to get into any trouble

I think that would be seen as a business but an accountant would advise better.

Sounds like you like it and could/should make it a legitimate business.
