As per title really, what new cars could be seen as a direct competitor to the Dacia brand? (ie sandero and Duster)

Cheers

My brothers doing project in marketing of cars. He asked me and I was a little stumped as I couldnt think of a car that is offered with a starting price so low and a car as basic.. It's like I tend to think Audi, BMW, Merc and Jag are each other's competitor for example.
Do they still make the Nissan pixo?

The new MG brand could be seen as competition-e.g. the MG3.

On a more serious note, how about Hindustan, and Daewoo until they got dropped by Chevrolet?

Perodua Myvi
Suzuki Alto
Proton Savvy
Kia Picanto
Seat Mii
Skoda Citigo
Citroen C1 / Pug 108

They're not all the same size granted, but they all get you into a new set of wheels with warranty for less than £9k, which surely has to make them competitors to the Sandero etc.

They are cheap, but at £9095 (list price), there's lots of cars out there much cheaper.

I reckon a Fiat dealer would easily knock £1k off that. Dacia dealers don't budge on price as far as i'm aware, so the gap might not be as big as you think.

Their competitors fall into two brackets, new cars and used cars. Used cars are the obvious one, you can have a new Duster or Sandero for the same price as a 2 year old Kia Sportage or Vauxhall Corsa. Dacia wins on 'newness' and warranty, the used car was nicer when new but is now 2nd hand so doesn't smell the same, you don't know how the first owner treated it etc.

The new car rivals are more interesting, when Dacia was first launched in France a few years back they found customers would buy a Logan or Sandero instead of spending the extra €5,000 on a Clio or Megane. This is a very pragmatic decision, where the customer wants a brand new car (for whatever reason) and decides that there's just no point in spending more, or that the alternative is nicer, but not by enough to justify the premium. The latter is the issue Renault France had, and was part of the reason the new Clio feels like a much better product from the cabin than the old one - to give off the impression that it's a better quality product than the cheaper Sandero which is in the same showroom.

You can quite significant discounts on Pandas, unlike the Dacia range.

I don't think it's just Renault that have upped the perceived quality. Peugeot, Citroen, Hyundai, Kia, Mistusbishi, etc have upped their interior quality in the last few years. Generally it's been getting to the point that even budget cars have a decent interior and reasonable seat. There aren't that many 'bad' mainstream new cars anymore, only cars that are boring to driving enthusiasts! However some also have problems like sharp, but feedback free, driver controls.

Renault own Dacia, so they're only competing with themselves. biggrin It's just a budget version of Renault, selling cheaper new cars based on older models, as they appeal more to less wealthy countries.
