The story goes like this.
I had a car that was written off in 2012 (cat c). I bought back the vehicle from the insurance company as it was a minor scratch and written off only due to the age of the car. So continued driving, mot'ing. Only thing i lost the capability to renew my tax online as i stopped receiving tax reminders (as it was a cat C presumably) so no issues there whatsoever. I'd go to my local post office with my V5c (which i had since day one) and the relevant insurance document and volla. I'd get the tax disc.
I sold my car in Oct.'14 with tax due to Run out in Dec'14. The new owner knew the car needed a VIC check. I gave him the slip of sale off the old V5C and sent away the logbook with all his details on it to DVLA. that should have been the end of story.

Just out of curiosity (or perhaps i was bored at work) i decided the check the status of me ole car online from the DVLA website to see the status. to my surprise the vehicle still showed "VIC check required". But the surprising part was it had tax until Dec '15.
To my knowledge this isn't possible unless there is a V5C logbook which he doesn't have.
The question is if its possible to change ownership of a vehicle requiring VIC check then is it possible to tax it also?
I am assuming when i sent away the old logbook the DVLA must have sent him a letter instead reminding him that his vehicle would need a VIC check but definitely not the V5C.

Can someone solve this puzzle?

I could ask the previous owner but i no longer have his details.

Why would they not send him the V5? I would have thought they would still send him one regardless if it needs a VIC or not. He can also tax it with the new keeper supplement at a post office as well, unless I'm mistaken.

Weirdly I was just looking at this..

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-identity-check/overview

So apparently no V5, wondering how this applies to address changes though as I need to change the address on my gf's car.

He's got a V5C/2, though, and you can tax it on that for a few months after the change-of-keeper date. So he'd have done it with that, but he'll be stuffed this December without VICing it.
