Tentative what car. Ideas please.

Hi folks,
As it looks like my shed will soon be giving up - suspected headgasket failure - the time has come to dip my toe in the car buying world once again.
Not a massive budget by any means but a fair bit to me, maybe £2500 at a stretch. The thing is, I want something interesting. No VAG, unless it's older and/or 5 cylinder, no French and probably no 4-pots. It's not that I don't like any of the aforementioned things, I just don't fancy owning any of them.
Ideally I'd like a barge, 5 cylinders or more and probably an Auto. So far I've been thinking along the lines of: Volvo 850/V70, Jag XJ, big BMW and I do like a Saab.
I'm open to ideas folks, so give me what you've got
