1998 Integra Type-R advice
Discussion
After originally intending to view a CW FN2 type-R this Wednesday and ultimately scrapping that, after I factored out my man maths, I wandered over to the DC2 type-R's. Were I stumbled upon this particular car http://www.kgfclassiccars.co.uk/details.php?cid=42...
Although it appears to be pricey compared to a lot of the other Integra's available. It does look to be in very good condition with a substantial service record. However as I've never bought a car (never mind a niche car such as the DC2) I'm a little apprehensive due to my lack of mechanical knowledge. Should I get a 2nd opinion in the form of an AA vehicle inspection or should a test drive and a good looking over the car for any signs of rust and weak suspension/ worn out tyres suffice?
As someone who's never bought a car before I wouldn't mind some advice from fellow petrolheads who've been there and got the t-shirt!

I would say that it is a very strong price, I think they are a car that is set to go up in the future, but I don't quite think that we are there yet. For reference I paid £1500 lees for my DC2 nearly 9 years ago with slightly less milage.
The things to look out for is rust on the rear arches, if it is showing on the outside (especially under the stickers on the rear quarter) that it is a lot worse inside as they rust from the inside out. Best thing to do is to remove the rear speaker covers and shine a torch down to take a peak at the sills.
The other thing to consider is suspension bushes, it may be low milage but the rubber is now 17 years old and will be very tired. It can be very expensive to get all the bushes replaced.
Head on over to ITR-DC2.com, they are a friendly bunch.

There's one on the MLR in the non-Evo section for £7500 and with a turbo:

That's a ridiculous price, unless my scan missed something major?
Just this: "A sensational UK Honda DC2 Integra Type-R with full Honda history and 69,520 miles."And: "This vehicle is certain to appeal to a collector of performance classics wanting one of the best, most original low mileage examples in existence."
If you are buying the car to use regularly and are worried about keeping it in good nick then I would be looking elsewhere. Cars at that end of the market will also be very hard to sell if/when that time comes. If you are going to garage it and only use it in good weather and want to get most/all of your cash back when you sell it then it could be a good buy.
Things I would check/expect of a car at the top end of the market:
Suspension re-bush
Evidence of cambelt change in the last few years.
Intervals between services. Standard interval is 6k miles I think.
Dates of other fluid changes - gearbox, brake fluid
Tyres - could be perished on a low mileage car. DC2s are sensitive to tyre choice.
Gearbox synchros at high revs
Signs of smoke/oil usage
Signs of accident damage or bodywork repairs
Signs of rust inside the rear arches (look/feel through the rear speaker grilles with a torch)
Any undesirable modifications (could be things the dealer does not know about or hasn't declared)
If possible take someone with you who knows DC2s. Be interested to know the outcome!
Edit: just noticed - the ad says it has front and rear vented discs - but the rears are actually solid. Also noticed it has had the cambelt done recently so that's good.

Fogs were am option as far I'm aware.
That is silly money if you're actually going to drive it yourself.
Fantastic cars, the main thing to look for is oil burning when engaging VTEC. Look for blue smoke from the exhaust. If it's suffering it will drink oil - the issue relates to the piston rings/valve stem seals eventually leading to cylinder decompression.

Crazy price. I sold my UKDM car 12 months ago for just under £3500. Was strong mechanically buy arches were a little rusty and it had 120k miles. That was just a useable car that you could take to the shops, carry a mountain bike in and then take on a trackday.
Brilliantly focused car and much missed. I ran mine for 40k miles and loved every minute.

DC2 values do seem to be on the rise now, I noticed particularly in the last 6 months. Finding good ones is tricky and many are being broken and the parts sold for a higher value. I don't ever see them going the way of fast Fords for example but I don't think you'll lose much on a good one.
Edited - the linked car does seem expensive, but if its standard with a fully documented history, there aren't many good ones about.

Great cars but that one is overpriced and the advert is full of pointless woffle out of a magazine and not much detail on the car does it even say how many owners it's had ?
At 69k miles it's value will soon drop if you use it much. Plenty of nice ones available for much less also don't be too concerned about the mileage these are perfectly capable of huge mileages with FSH and most of them were already heading close to 100k 5 years ago.

My intention was to use it as a fun weekend car and not as a daily driver (I get the train). I'm still in two minds about it, I really wanted an EP3 (UKDM) Type-R but gave up after 6 months due to the fierce competition for decent ones at good value. Are the DC2's significantly better than the UKDM EP3's? I'm not keen on getting an JDM EP3 as I'm 22 and with only a years no claims, insurance will be more expensive.
