Pleasantly surprised - for a while

I drive on B-roads to work, and prefer to start early and finish early.
This morning I set off from my house in the middle of nowhere and had the honour of laying the first tyre tracks in the snow. I live around 30 miles from work and usually another few cars appear on the way. Usually they're too slow and I overtake but this morning it was different.
I was surrounded by competence. The car I was following a few hundred yards behind was going at a reasonable speed on sighted straights with no hazards, and slowing gently before corners. The car following me was likewise a sensible distance behind.
Some turned off and others joined, and it all seemed so - competent. We passed an A6 that was planted in a ditch on a long straight some time yesterday, now covered in a blanket of snow - but I ignored that. Everyone else seemed to know what they were doing.
Alas it came to an end when we rounded a corner and a Micra had headbutted an oncoming 3rd party having lost control coming down a curving slope to a T-junction. Then we met someone jogging in the middle of nowhere, wearing a black leotard but with a flashing red bike light stuck to his backside.
Apart from the A6, the Micra and the kamikaze jogger though, most people seemed to have a reasonable grasp on what they were doing this morning on snow!
